- A roughly 2-hour ‘Foldervania’ adventure completed with photos, letters, and puzzles
- The first work by the development team consisting of the director and producer of ‘The Rogue: Prince of Persia’
‘MyDear.exe’ , the first title from French indie developer Falling Leaves Studio based in Bordeaux, has been officially released on the PC platform.
This new title is available for purchase on the global PC game distribution platforms Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a retail price of $7.75 (prices vary by region). In particular, to celebrate the launch, it will be available at a 40% discount during the first week.
‘MyDear.exe’, which has garnered attention as its release schedule, unique concept, and development team history were previously introduced in this magazine, is a narrative-driven adventure game that unfolds the touching story of the 57-year journey of the couple ‘Ellie’ and ‘Lucien’ as they explore the folders of an old PC.
The player takes on the perspective of the wife, Ellie, and explores a virtual game specially created by her husband, Lucien, exclusively for her.
In a virtual PC environment inspired by the Windows XP operating system, users can directly open various folders and files, encountering the couple’s precious memories with an analog sensibility through records such as hidden photos, letters, and memos.
In addition, colorful mini-games and password-solving puzzle elements are placed throughout to enhance immersion. The developer has garnered attention by naming this unique gameplay style, which combines the non-linear exploration structure characteristic of the classic Metroidvania genre with a virtual computer directory system, “Foldervania.”
All conversations between Ellie and Lucien in the game are fully voiced, adding depth to the narrative. The developer has announced an official playtime of approximately two hours, presenting a compact adventure format that allows players to neatly wrap up the story without feeling overwhelmed, much like watching a short film or reading a novel amidst a busy daily life.
With the official release, rave reviews from major overseas game media outlets are following suit. DEBUG Magazine, a global indie game publication, highly praised the game, describing it as “a short but above all sweet experience that carefully writes down the emotion of love using digital 0s and 1s.”
Another media outlet, Navigames.es, also described it as a “charming masterpiece that beautifully reminisces about the love an elderly couple has shared through the medium of an old computer,” citing the fact that the narrative and relationship between the two protagonists were portrayed very naturally, rather than artificially, as its greatest strength.
Meanwhile, Falling Leaves Studio, which unveiled this new title, is an independent French developer with the motto of “deep, compact games that can be fully enjoyed and finished in just one afternoon.”
The studio’s co-founders, Lucy and Zolang, are known as veterans with solid development careers, having served as the core game director and producer for the recently critically acclaimed roguelike action game *The Rogue Prince of Persia*, which is further building trust among genre fans.
More information about ‘MyDear.exe’, which captures a warm romance story within a virtual OS infrastructure that evokes nostalgia for the past, can be found on the official Steam and Epic Games Store pages.
