5-Player Co-op Zombie FPS ‘Codename Cure 2’ Officially Released for Free on Steam

    By Editorial Team2026년 07월 27일5 Mins Read
    • Newly rebuilt predecessor enjoyed by 2.5 million… Featuring 5 classes and intense zombie combat
    • Combat and gore effects enhanced by Unreal Engine 5… A free co-op FPS that even supports Steam Decks
    • ‘Very Positive’ on Steam on launch day… Modern reimagining of the fun of the predecessor enjoyed by 2.5 million people

Codename Cure II, a 5-player cooperative FPS developed by Raptor Byte and published by indie.io, was officially released for free on Steam on July 24.

Code Name Cure 2 is a cooperative FPS set in a post-zombie apocalypse world where up to five players form a team to eliminate the infected. Players select classes suited to their roles and are deployed on various missions, with teamwork and strategic combat being key elements.

Along with the launch, the ‘Combat Specialist Pack’ DLC was also unveiled, which includes new firearms, weapon attachments, and military-style cosmetics. The DLC is priced at $9.99 and is being sold at a 20% discount to celebrate the launch.

From zombie dogs to random bosses… Cooperative combat created by 5 classes

Code Name Cure 2 is a work that goes beyond simply expanding the system of the previous game and was created anew from scratch.

The map is constructed using a procedural generation method that combines various tilesets, allowing for a different mission environment every time, and in combat, a reactive gore system is applied so that different damage and destruction effects appear depending on the body part when attacking zombies.

The sense of impact and realism in combat has been enhanced by adding effects such as dynamic severance of limbs and heads or body deformation, a multi-layered damage system, and realistic depictions of clothes and bodies burning when exposed to flames.

There is also a variety of enemy types. While regular infected and infected soldiers appear as the main enemies, a zombie dog named ‘Zog’ also appears, which approaches the player at high speed or throws itself from a distance.

In particular, the semi-selectable boss ‘The Disciple,’ which appears at random locations during missions, can be fought or avoided depending on the situation. However, depending on the map generation method, bypassing it may be difficult in some cases, requiring different judgments each time.

At ‘CURE HQ’ located between missions, you can maintain your equipment, test your weapons, check your rank progress, and prepare for the next mission.

Players can choose one of five classes: Pointman, Support, Assault, Technician, and Sniper. Each class features a unique weapon and attachment configuration, and AI-controlled enemies also utilize the same equipment as the player.

Accessibility encompassing Unreal Engine 5-based visuals and Steam Decks

Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game features realistic combat, gore, and destruction effects. Additionally, it offers full Steam Deck support and Proton support for Linux environments, allowing players to enjoy the game in various settings.

Another feature is the division of roles among the five classes, added to the gloomy and desperate atmosphere characteristic of a zombie apocalypse. Since each class performs a different role, it is crucial to assemble a team and coordinate combat strategies according to the enemy composition and mission situation.

The ‘Combat Specialist Pack’ released alongside it includes new firearms such as the SPAR12-SA semi-automatic shotgun for Pointmen, the SPAR12-PA pump-action shotgun for Technicians, and the ‘Patriot’ high-firepower sidearm usable by all classes.

It also offers a variety of attachments, such as holographic sights usable on most primary weapons, micro cobra dot sights applicable to all pistols, and tactical suppressors. You can also customize your equipment to your liking with military-style cosmetics, including ballistic masks and combat uniform finishes.

The predecessor enjoyed by 2.5 million… reborn in a new form

Developer Raptor Bite has already achieved success in the cooperative zombie shooter genre with its previous title.

The previous title, ‘Codename CURE’, recorded over 16,000 user reviews on Steam and received an overall ‘Very Positive’ rating. It also gained significant popularity, with cumulative players exceeding 2.5 million.

This title has been rebuilt from scratch, building upon the core fun of the previous game while incorporating modern development tools and expanded systems. In particular, it is characterized by providing a fresh gameplay environment every time through procedural map generation, diverse classes, and an enhanced combat system.

84% ‘Very Positive’ on Day 1… All DLCs Also Receive Positive Reviews

User response immediately after launch has also been positive. Currently, it is receiving a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam, with 84% of the 336 user reviews being positive.

The ‘Combat Specialist Pack,’ released alongside it, is also off to a good start, with all 15 reviews being positive. Overseas media outlets are also citing procedurally generated maps, a responsive gore system, and an expanded class structure as key features, evaluating it as a sequel capable of continuing the popularity of its predecessor.

Above all, with the accessibility of being free to enjoy and the added fun of the cooperative zombie shooter proven in the previous game, ‘Code Name: Cure 2’ is poised to recapture the popularity of its predecessor, which attracted over 2.5 million players. It remains to be seen whether it can be reproduced.
