Hook action completed with hand-drawn art without AI, ‘Grapple Bear’ developed by a solo artist in Hungary

    By Editorial Team2026년 07월 11일4 Mins Read
    • From winning a community challenge to publishing… The challenge of a Hungarian solo developer
    • All hand-drawn backgrounds and characters… A new indie title boasting ‘No AI Artwork’
    • A mother bear’s journey to find her cub, winning with hand-drawn graphics and intricate hook action.

There is no jumping or running. The player is given only a single grappling hook. ‘Grapple Bear,’ a precision platformer developed by Hungarian solo developer ProkischDaniel and published by HEJ Collective (Havi Egy Játék), is set to be released on Steam.

Grapple Bear depicts the journey of a mother bear who has lost her cubs and navigates a dangerous world relying solely on a grappling hook. She must break through diverse environments—crossing rivers, passing through crumbling ancient ruins, lava caves, cliffs, and even space-twisting wormholes—using only grappling hook action.

The game was produced by hand-drawing all graphics and completing them digitally, and the developer has revealed that they did not use any AI-generated images, drawing attention.

A world that began on paper… Choosing hand-drawn art over AI

The most distinctive feature of Grapple Bear is its hand-drawn graphics, which exude a warm sensibility. All characters, backgrounds, and objects were created based on illustrations drawn directly on paper, which were then digitally colored to complete the game’s world.

The adventure begins in a peaceful forest and extends to the ruins of an ancient civilization, a cave of boiling lava, a cliff swept by fierce winds, and a wormhole where the laws of reality are defied. Each region possesses distinct colors and atmospheres, offering the fun of encountering unique landscapes every time you arrive at a new area.

In addition, the sense of speed and tension from throwing and swinging the hook as it moves, combined with the journey of the mother bear searching for her cub, creates a unique atmosphere.

No jumping, no running… Action completed with a single grappling hook

Grapple Bear lacks the jumping or running features found in typical platformers. All movement must be accomplished using a single grappling hook.

Players must throw a grappling hook to hook onto terrain and use it to swing or gain momentum to move to the next point. While the controls themselves are simple, players experience a high level of difficulty as they master the precise timing and physics responses.

The game features over 40 handcrafted stages, with new gimmicks and hazards appearing in each area to change the gameplay. Additionally, the tension is heightened by cinematic effects that make it seem as though an unknown entity is chasing the player from somewhere.

Even after completing Story Mode, you can enjoy record competitions and Time Attack content through the global leaderboard, and new procedural challenge stages and exclusive leaderboards are provided every week to motivate repeated play.

A project born in the Hungarian indie community

Grapple Bear is a work developed by Hungarian solo developer ProkischDaniel and was created through the monthly game development challenge of HEJ Collective (Havi Egy Játék).

HEJ Collective is a community that has been supporting Hungarian indie game developers since 2019, running regular game development challenges, meetups, and mentoring.

Grapple Bear was selected as a Season 1 publishing label title after receiving high marks in the monthly challenge they conducted, and it is also significant as an example of a community project leading to an official commercial work.

Community Interest in Honest Declaration of “No AI Artwork”

Grapple Bear is garnering attention not only for its gameplay but also for the developer’s declaration that it “did not use AI artwork.”

As the use of generative AI images increases across the industry, the fact that all visuals were created by hand is considered an element that demonstrates the work’s unique character and level of perfection.

Platformer fans are looking forward to the unique movement system that relies solely on a grappling hook, the warm visuals characteristic of hand-drawn art, and the replayability elements that add new challenge stages every week.

Attention is focused on whether ‘Grapple Bear,’ featuring a unique movement system, sophisticated level design, and handcrafted visuals, can establish itself as a new challenge for precision platformer fans.
