- UK’s Spiderware, Winner of Discord ‘Adventure Together’ App Pitching 2024
- Securing 1 million users solely through Web and Discord … A success story breaking the traditional game distribution formula
- 7-hour demo unveiled at Steam Next Fest, official release scheduled for July 21
An MMORPG has emerged that has already secured over 1 million players even before its official release on Steam. ‘Soulbound,’ a pixel art MMORPG developed by the British indie studio Spiderware, unveiled a free demo with over 7 hours of gameplay at Steam Next Fest. The official release is scheduled for July 21st in an Early Access format.
Soulbound is garnering attention as a title that overturns the mold of existing game distribution formulas. Even before going through Steam or major platforms, it built a community of over 1 million people based on browsers and Discord, and this Steam launch marks the first time a game that has grown organically is entering a major PC platform.
GameDaily, a media outlet specializing in gaming, commented, “Providing a demo of over seven hours means players can fully experience the game before purchasing,” and assessed it as “a bold decision by Spiderware that demonstrates strong confidence in their game.”
Into a dazzling pixel world… An MMORPG where combat, growth, and mystery coexist
Soulbound is an MMORPG set in a virtual world realized with vibrant pixel art, where combat, growth, exploration, and mystery are organically interconnected. It is characterized by a combination of nostalgic retro visuals, fast-paced cooperative dungeons, raid content, and various life and growth systems.
Upon waking up in a digital world, the player encounters mysterious beings known as ‘The Anima.’ Having survived a moment of crisis with the help of a robot companion, the player embarks on an adventure to uncover the Anima’s true identity and the secrets hidden within the world. This narrative blends with the cozy atmosphere characteristic of pixel art to create a unique worldview where threat and hope coexist.
Freely develop Tanks, Healers, and DPS … Gameplay intertwined with progression and mystery
The core of the game lies in developing a character that suits your own play style. By combining over 12 types of abilities and various skill trees, you can freely build the role you desire, such as a tank, healer, or damage dealer.
The combat content is quite diverse. You can tackle fast-paced roguelike dungeons solo, or create a guild to take on more difficult challenges with other players.
The housing system is also an important element. The player’s house is not merely a space for decoration, but serves as a base for managing collected resources and crafting or upgrading equipment. As the character grows, the house evolves alongside them, providing new features.
In the dungeons, you will face increasingly powerful enemies and bosses, and compete against other players for records on in-game and Steam leaderboards. The game supports up to three-player co-op, allowing you to mine rare resources and tackle high-difficulty content together.
The Path of Self-Reliant Growth Taken by the Discord ‘Adventure Together’ Winner
Developer Spiderware began to attract industry attention after winning the ‘Adventure Together’ app pitching competition hosted by Discord in 2024. Since then, it has continued its service centered on browsers and Discord, securing over 1 million users.
GameDaily commented, “The demo is not merely a vertical slice allowing you to experience only a portion of the content, but rather a form of revealing parts of a game that has already been in service for a long time,” adding that “you can directly verify the vast worldview and robust user ecosystem that have grown together with the community.”
GameGrin also stated, “Soulbound is a game that originally ran on Discord and browsers and gathered over 1 million players,” introducing it as a unique case of growth without going through traditional distribution structures.
In this demo, players who complete the main story quests will receive limited cosmetic rewards, which will be transferred directly to their official Early Access accounts.
Together with a community of 1 million… UK indie team Spiderware’s first Steam challenge
Spiderware is a UK-based indie development team that has been growing Soulbound primarily through web and Discord platforms. The development team announced that during the demo period, they plan to run various events where players can share their progress through the Discord community and choose a faction to compete or cooperate.
Soulbound, having built a community of one million members using only a browser and Discord, is already regarded as a success story. The upcoming Steam Early Access launch in July is expected to be more than just a simple platform expansion; it will serve as a new starting point for the MMORPG, which has grown alongside its community, to advance onto a wider stage.
