Healing game ‘Summer House’, which sold 400,000 copies on Steam, released on consoles

    By Editorial Team2026년 05월 19일5 Mins Read
    • ISLANDERS co-creator Friedemann’s first solo project
    • Simultaneous launch on all console platforms after selling 400,000 copies on Steam and achieving a 93% positive rating.
    • “More of a toy than a game”… The charm of quiet architectural play with no goals or failures

“SUMMERHOUSE,” a mini-construction sandbox game by Berlin-based indie developer Friedemann Allmenröder and publisher Future Friends Games, has been released simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. A PC version has also been added to the Microsoft Store, along with support for Xbox Play Anywhere.

Since its release on Steam in 2024, Summer House has sold over 400,000 copies and recorded a 93% positive rating, quietly gaining popularity through word of mouth and becoming a favorite among fans of relaxing games. Having established itself as a “hidden gem” on Steam, this title is now expanding its reach to console platforms after about two years, allowing it to reach even more users.

A pixel village bathed in sunlight… A small world completed with pastel sensibilities

The biggest charm of Summer House is its comfortable and warm atmosphere. Players select one of four backgrounds—sea, city, mountains, or desert—and create their own space by freely placing various building elements such as blocks, doors, windows, roofs, chimneys, trees, and shrubs.

The game’s visuals were well-received by critics. Katharine Castle of Rock Paper Shotgun praised the rendering of shadows and water, while Kieron Verbrugge of Press Start cited “picturesque landscapes” and “enchanting backgrounds” as strengths. Mikhail Madnani of TouchArcade compared it to Townscaper, calling the visuals “dazzling.”

The village consists of more than just simple buildings. Unlockable object animations and NPC characters create subtle movements and daily life, breathing life into the space. ‘Environmental storytelling,’ where the narrative unfolds naturally without explicit explanation, is cited as the hidden charm of this work.

The sound design also completes the dreamlike atmosphere. Gentle environmental sounds, the leisurely flow of everyday noises, and the naturally transitioning day and night blend together to make the entire game feel like a ‘playable daydream.’

A resting space disguised as a city builder… “It’s closer to a toy than a game”

Summer House is a game that boldly strips away the conventions of existing city-building games. There is no need to manage resources, prepare for disasters, or calculate efficiency. It does not require players to do anything or do it quickly; players simply need to focus on building what they want. This design philosophy is interpreted as a key element that clearly distinguishes the game from the traditional city-builder genre.

One PS5 reviewer described it as “the perfect antidote for users tired of modern console games that demand endless progression and rewards.” They added, “The game does not force you to spend money, time, effort, or patience.” However, they also noted that the moments where one had to “think for oneself about what to create” during controller operation felt burdensome.

Media outlet Little Bits of Gaming described it as “a game that can be enjoyed without pressure at an affordable price,” noting that “the experience of building a house on a pastel landscape is like the pleasure of lightly doodling on the corner of a notebook.” At the same time, they pointed out both the strengths and limitations, noting that “the depth of the content may feel somewhat shallow once the initial freshness fades.”

ISLANDERS Co-creator’s First Solo Project… Capturing the Sensibility of Summer Vacation

Developer Friedemann Allmenröder co-founded Grizzly Games with his college friends and participated in the development of ISLANDERS and Superflight. He later co-created Pizza Possum , and Summer House is his first solo project completed entirely on his own.

During the development process, it was influenced by Townscaper, A Short Hike, and Stronghold: Crusader, and the work was conceived as a “love letter dedicated to the sensations of childhood summer vacation.”

LadiesGamers, a media outlet that gave the original a high rating upon its PC release, gave a positive assessment of the console version, noting that the original’s comfortable atmosphere and experience were preserved intact.

Meanwhile, alongside this console release, Friedemann Allmenröder’s other solo project, ‘Slots & Daggers,’ has also been released on console platforms. This title is also receiving a positive response, recording sales of nearly 300,000 copies and a 94% positive rating on Steam.

A small building game with neither efficiency nor competition. Summer House raises the question of whether games must necessarily be driven by goals and rewards, and demonstrates another possibility for healing games that focus on quiet relaxation and the joy of creation.
