A groundbreaking report released in late December by market analysis firm Alinea Analytics reveals that the PC gaming platform Steam is projected to reach a record-breaking $17.7 billion in total revenue for 2025.
The most striking shift in this year’s market data is the absolute dominance of Swedish developers. In an unprecedented feat for a single nation, Sweden accounted for 20% of Steam’s total revenue, effectively overtaking traditional industry giants like North America and China.

The “Stockholm Effect” and the Indie Surge
The concentration of success is particularly high in Sweden’s capital; developers based in Stockholm alone generated 16% of the platform’s total revenue. This surge is attributed to a “dual-engine” growth strategy: the massive commercial success of AAA blockbusters like Battlefield 6, coupled with a flourishing ecosystem of innovative indie titles.
Indie games have become a powerhouse in their own right, contributing 25% (approximately $4.5 billion) of Steam’s total revenue this year. Leading this charge is “R.E.P.O.”, developed by Semi-work, an indie studio based in Uppsala, Sweden. R.E.P.O. alone accounted for 3% of all units sold on Steam in 2025, serving as the primary catalyst for the “Swedish Indie Wave.”
Top Performers and Market Disparity
While total revenue has hit an all-time high, the report also highlights a widening “wealth gap” within the platform:
- Top Performer: Battlefield 6 secured its spot as the year’s biggest hit with approximately 23.8 million players.
- The $1M Threshold: Despite the record-breaking $17.7 billion total, only about 300 games managed to surpass the $1 million revenue mark, indicating a heavy concentration of profits among top-tier titles.
- Technical Independence: In a surprising trend, 41% of the top 100 highest-grossing games utilized custom in-house engines rather than third-party tools like Unity or Unreal, suggesting that technical independence is increasingly linked to high profitability.
“The Swedish gaming ecosystem has led the global PC market this year through a perfect harmony between large-scale capital and creative indie studios,” evaluated Alinea Analytics.
