One-button runner with optical illusion quiz… ‘Parallax Orbit’ ranks 5th on Google Paid Arcade

    By Editorial Team2026년 09월 01일5 Mins Read
    • Launched as a new indie IP without advertising or marketing, it secured a top spot on popular paid charts early on.
    • An optical illusion quiz appears after colliding with an obstacle; revive if correct, game ends if incorrect.
    • An optical illusion-based casual arcade game created by a cognitive science major and a game planner with 13 years of experience.

‘Parallax: Orbit,’ a one-button optical illusion runner game developed by the indie game development team NEUTWORK, reached a peak of 5th place on the domestic Google Play ‘Popular Paid Arcade Games’ ranking.

‘Parallax Orbit’, released on August 19, entered the chart at number 6 on the 24th and rose to number 5 on the 29th. As of the 31st, it is maintaining number 6.

It is drawing attention that a new indie game, which does not rely on existing IP or franchises, entered and maintained a high ranking on paid game charts early in its release without separate advertising or marketing.

The moment you let go, an ‘optical illusion’ determines life or death.

‘Parallax Orbit’ is a mobile game that combines a one-button runner game, where the character ascends when the screen is pressed and descends when released, with visual illusion quizzes. Players fly while avoiding obstacles and controlling their altitude with a single control.

The game does not end immediately if you hit an obstacle. Instead, a visual illusion quiz appears, and if you answer correctly, you revive and can continue driving. Conversely, if you choose the wrong answer, the game ends, and that decision is recorded in your play history.

The ability to accurately judge optical illusions acts as a core rule that determines survival and records, going beyond a mere bonus.

The game features 13 types of optical illusion quizzes inspired by phenomena long studied in cognitive and perceptual psychology, such as the Poggendorf illusion, the Müller-Lyer illusion, the Hering illusion, and the Jastrow illusion. It tests the player’s judgment by utilizing human visual characteristics that perceive the direction and length of lines, color and brightness, size, and movement differently.

The controls are simple enough to be learned in a few seconds. However, to fly for a long time, not only running skills but also the ability to quickly and accurately read the information in front of you is required.

After the game ends, the distance traveled, light collected, and the choices and reaction speeds made during the optical illusion quiz are converted into colors and trajectories and provided as a personalized ‘Orbit Map’. It also supports a global leaderboard where you can compete against users worldwide.

Visualization where the result of a judgment becomes an orbit

The distinguishing feature of ‘Parallax Orbit’ is that the gameplay results are recorded as graphics in the form of a different trajectory for each user. What optical illusion was fooled by, how quickly the user reacted, and what choices were made are visually recorded on the ‘Orbit Map’.

The development team explains that this is not a psychological test diagnosing personality or cognitive abilities, but rather a visualization of choices and reactions observed during a single playthrough. Through their gameplay records, users can reflect on whether they tend to double-check information or rely on first impressions to make quick judgments.

Just as the optical illusion quiz, which is the core of the game, utilizes the direction and length of lines, color and brightness, size, and movement, the overall visuals are also designed to intuitively reveal perceptual illusions.

A meeting between a cognitive science major and a 13-year veteran game designer

‘Parallax Orbit’ is a work created by two co-creators at Newtworks who combined their different expertise.

One is a game-based digital therapeutic (DTx) planner who majored in psychology and cognitive science at Ewha Womans University and received a master’s degree from the Cognitive Science Interdisciplinary Program at Seoul National University. The other is a game planner who majored in game engineering at Korea University of Engineering and has accumulated 13 years of planning experience at major game companies such as Pearl Abyss and Krafton.

The team composition, combining an understanding of cognitive psychology with experience in commercial game development, aligns with the design of ‘Parallax Orbit,’ which utilizes optical illusions as a central rule of the game.

Rising chart rankings without separate marketing immediately elicit a response

‘Parallax Orbit’ has not yet accumulated a wide range of media or Google Play user reviews. Nevertheless, its performance stands out, having ranked 6th on the domestic Google Play paid arcade game chart in its first week of release and peaking at 5th place without any separate advertising or marketing.

The fact that an indie game released without the recognition of an existing IP entered the top ranks of the paid charts solely through organic influx and maintained its position for over ten days proves that the gameplay, which combines a one-button runner with optical illusion quizzes, is being received as a fresh experience by users.

‘Parallax Orbit’ is a title that incorporates optical illusions, a representative subject of cognitive psychology, into the rules of survival within the game. With a short, repetitive gameplay structure enhanced by personalized ‘Orbit Map’ visualizations, attention is focused on whether this game can translate its initial chart performance into long-term user engagement and community expansion.
