Hordeguard: Winds of the North Preview: Slovak Two-Person Studio’s Viking Action Tower Defense Signs With Daedalic Entertainment

    By Editorial Team2026년 08월 19일5 Mins Read

A Viking settlement in a world governed by Norse mythology. Mythological creatures attacking in waves. A player who must simultaneously explore the surrounding territory for resources, construct and reinforce defenses, and fight in real-time combat — while knowing that every moment spent exploring is a moment the next enemy wave is growing stronger and closer.

Hordeguard: Winds of the North from Slovakia’s two-person Black Deer Games (published by Daedalic Entertainment) has been announced alongside a trailer and gameplay reveal at the Daedalic Days: Late at Night showcase. International press picked it up within 24 hours. The release date remains TBA on Steam.

    The Exploration-Defense Tension

The design’s core tension is explicit and elegant: resource gathering requires leaving the safety of the settlement, but time spent away from the settlement accelerates the pressure of the incoming enemy wave. Every expedition is a calculated risk — more resources against more danger arriving sooner.

This is a different kind of time pressure than games that simply put a countdown timer on-screen. The wave acceleration based on exploration behavior creates a causal relationship between the player’s actions and the difficulty escalation. You’re not racing against a fixed clock; you’re managing the rate at which the threat grows based on how aggressively you pursue resources. A conservative player who rarely explores builds slowly but faces a more gradual escalation; an aggressive player who pushes into dangerous territory gains more but faces waves arriving at greater strength and speed.

This risk-reward calibration — inherent to the exploration decision itself rather than imposed externally — is the design quality that makes the premise interesting rather than just thematically appropriate.

    The Genre Combination

Action tower defense with RPG growth elements is a combination that the genre’s most successful recent titles have validated: players want to be physically present in the combat rather than only managing it from an overhead view, and the upgrade card system that provides character and settlement specialization gives runs strategic identity beyond reaction and placement.

The three development directions — warrior (combat power), builder (settlement infrastructure), guardian (defense reinforcement) — create distinct strategic identities that change how the exploration-defense tension is experienced. A warrior build may fight through dangerous territory more effectively; a builder build may fortify positions more efficiently; a guardian build may make the settlement more resilient against waves without requiring as much pre-wave preparation.

The upgrade card acquisition through combat experience is the roguelite layer that gives each run its specific strategic character — the cards available shape which development direction is viable, creating run-to-run variety beyond the procedural elements.

    The Black Deer Games Context

Peter Jurkovský founded Black Deer Games in 2015 as a solo studio; veteran artist Dávid Jankeš joined to form the current two-person team. Their 25+ games of combined experience produced Juro Jánošík in 2021 — an action adventure based on a legendary Slovak folk hero — and the studio is simultaneously developing Wendigo Hunter, an action roguelite.

The Juro Jánošík background is the most culturally interesting element of this studio’s identity: a Slovak game about a Slovak folk hero, made by Slovak developers. Hordeguard represents a pivot to broader mythological territory (Norse mythology, which has global commercial reach that Slovak national mythology doesn’t), while Wendigo Hunter extends into North American indigenous mythology. These are three different mythological traditions from a two-person team, which suggests a studio that is specifically interested in mythology as a creative framework rather than a convenient setting.

The Daedalic Entertainment publishing partnership provides the distribution infrastructure and marketing presence that a two-person Slovak studio couldn’t establish independently. Daedalic’s catalog has included titles across multiple genres and scales, and their “Late at Night” showcase specifically focused on the smaller, more experimental games in their publishing pipeline.

    Who Is This For

Strong fit for: tower defense players who specifically want active combat participation rather than pure strategic placement; Norse mythology enthusiasts who want the setting applied to a hybrid genre rather than pure action or strategy; local co-op players looking for a game that works well with a partner splitting exploration and defense responsibilities; players who enjoy the exploration-resource-defense triangle that survival games use, applied to a structured wave defense context.

Cautious fit for: players who need confirmed release dates before investing attention; tower defense purists who prefer the genre’s traditional overhead placement-only format; players who want online multiplayer alongside local co-op.

Less ideal for: players who dislike action combat in their tower defense; anyone seeking narrative depth alongside the strategic gameplay; players wanting a single-player-only design rather than co-op support.

    The Takeaway

Hordeguard: Winds of the North is a two-person Slovak studio’s Norse mythology action tower defense — a genre combination whose central design tension, exploration time directly affecting wave escalation, creates causal risk-reward rather than fixed difficulty pressure. Daedalic Entertainment’s publishing partnership and immediate international press attention confirm the announcement has communicated effectively before a release date exists.

The settlement is not yet built. The mythological creatures are massing. The territory beyond the walls has resources worth risking. The question is how much time you can spend getting them before the next wave arrives.
