A casting puzzle on the theater stage… Hand-drawn aesthetic ‘I Want to Play the Villain!’ unveiled

    By Editorial Team2026년 08월 05일4 Mins Read
    • A new theatrical stage background puzzle game from the developer of ‘Boxville,’ which was acclaimed for its hand-drawn aesthetic.
    • An unusual fusion of theater and logic puzzles… Demo on August 17, release scheduled for Q1 2027

Ukrainian indie developer Triomatica Games has unveiled a new logic puzzle game set on a theatrical stage called ‘I Want to Play the Villain!’

The game is scheduled to be released on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, and a free demo will be released first on Steam on August 17.

Triomatica Games is a studio that has garnered attention by winning the GDWC 2023 Mobile Award and the PGA 2023 Best Indie International Game Award for its hand-drawn, sentimental puzzle adventure ‘Boxville’ .

The new game ‘I Want to Play the Villain!’ is a unique puzzle game set on a theatrical stage where players create the perfect performance by considering the personalities and relationships of the actors.

A logic puzzle that orchestrates the actors’ desires to complete a perfect performance

‘I Want to Play the Villain!’ is a theatrical logic puzzle game where you complete a performance by rearranging the cast and changing the story.

Every actor on stage possesses distinct personalities, including their own dreams, ambitions, fears, and preferred roles. The player must create a stage that satisfies all the actors by adjusting the casting, changing costumes, or modifying the story progression itself.

The game proceeds in a structure where a single small choice significantly alters the flow of the entire performance, such as assigning a desired lead role to someone, placing well-matched actors in the same scene, or switching roles to avoid a feared situation.

Each chapter will feature new backgrounds, characters, and puzzle rules, promising plenty of fun in solving problems in a unique way every time.

A warm stage where the sensibility of hand-drawn animation meets theater.

In their previous work, ‘Boxville’, Triomatica Games hand-drew all the backgrounds and characters, adding distinctive music to every scene to deliver the fun of puzzles that felt like watching an animated film.

‘I Want to Play the Villain!’ also inherits the studio’s signature hand-drawn style. With the addition of the theater theme to warm colors and charming direction, it is expected to create a spectacular yet human drama.

Ukrainian indie studio that proved its skills with ‘Boxville’

Triomatica Games is an indie game developer that started in Ukraine in 2020 and is an independent studio that handles all processes in-house, from art and programming to publishing.

Its flagship title, ‘Boxville’, is a puzzle adventure game set in a city of silent tin villagers. On Steam, it maintains a ‘Very Positive’ rating with 91% of its 367 user reviews being positive, and it won the GDWC 2023 Mobile Award and the PGA 2023 Best Indie International Game Award.

The sequel, ‘Boxville 2’, is also being evaluated as continuing the quality of the series, having been selected as a finalist for GDWC 2025 following in the footsteps of the previous work.

Securing buzz immediately after reveal, targeting official launch in Q1 2027

‘I Want to Play the Villain!’ is attracting attention from international game media and indie game fans as the next title from a developer that has been recognized for the quality of its predecessor, ‘Boxville’.

Development is underway with a target of the first quarter of 2027 for the official launch, and it is planned to support a total of 13 languages, including English and Ukrainian, as well as French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Attention is focused on how Triomatica Games, which has been well-received for its hand-drawn animation aesthetic and unique puzzle design, will approach the unique subject of theater in a game this time.
