A story of a magical girl exhausted by burnout… ‘Dear Magical Girls’ released for free on Steam

    By Editorial Team2026년 08월 03일5 Mins Read
    • The debut title of GIGABlock Studio, a four-member team from Krafton Jungle Game Lab
    • A story-driven barrier defense game combining cute pixel graphics and realistic labor narratives
    • Surpasses 8,000 Wishlist Items Just 2 Weeks After Release… 98% of Reviews Immediately After Launch ‘Very Positive’

‘Dear Magical Girls’ , a story-driven barrier defense game developed by GIGABlock Studio, a four-person K-indie game development team under Krafton Jungle Game Lab, was officially released for free on Steam on July 31 at 4 p.m.

The game surpassed 8,000 wishlist items about two weeks after its release on the Steam store page, and the gameplay trailer released on YouTube recorded about 75,000 views in just three days, attracting the attention of fans of the magical girl genre.

The player takes on the role of Arin, a fourth-year magical girl, and carries out a mission to stop the invasion of monsters threatening the city. Arin endures repeated emergency dispatches and night shifts to protect the mana stones that maintain the city’s magical infrastructure, while building a barrier toward the other world and fighting against enemies.

The game focuses on the daily life and emotions of a magical girl who gradually grows weary amidst repetitive work, rather than on a glamorous heroic tale. Arin becomes increasingly exhausted from the endless dispatches since her first day at work and the emergency calls that ring even after she gets off, but the story depicts how her longtime senior Charlotte, her cousin Lily who admires magical girls, and the ordinary daily life she wants to protect help her get back on her feet.

A unique strategic system that changes the battlefield by manipulating barriers

The biggest feature of ‘Dear Magical Girls’ is its combat system, which allows you to change the shape of the battlefield by directly moving the vertices of the barrier.

Expanding the barrier allows you to secure more resources but disperses your attack power, whereas narrowing the barrier allows you to concentrate firepower within a small area. In addition, a unique mechanism has been added where the Mana Cannon moves along the lines of the barrier to attack enemies.

Before battle, players can construct their own unique builds by combining various modules and Bounds, and travel between the city and the other world while carrying out various missions sent from headquarters. As the gameplay continues, the truth behind the events surrounding magic and magical girls is gradually revealed.

Dystopian sentiment hidden within cute 2D pixel art

Charming 2D animation-style graphics and intricate pixel art. At first glance, the game brings to mind an endlessly bright and lovely magical girl worldview, but beneath the surface lurks a chilling dark fantasy and dystopian atmosphere.

Players control magical girls amidst dazzling visuals, but as the narrative progresses, they witness the girls gradually exhausting their emotions and becoming worn out during repetitive battles. It is characterized by a unique and profound sensibility that sets it apart from existing bishoujo games, achieved through the intricate interplay of the visual ‘light’ and the story’s ‘darkness’.

Overseas media outlet TechTimes evaluated that “it reinterpreted the typical magical girl whose mission was to save the world as a character like an office worker who is exhausted from repeating the same work for four years,” while another overseas media outlet evaluated that the unique game system, which involves fighting by directly transforming barriers, creates a distinctive personality.

The debut title of Jungle Game Lab, a four-person team of developers in their early to mid-20s.

The developer GIGABlock Studio It is a four-person indie game development team under Krafton Jungle Game Lab, composed of developers in their early to mid-20s. ‘Dear Magical Girls’ is their first Steam release, and Jungle Game Lab handled the publishing.

The development team stated, “’Dear Magical Girls’ is a work that views magical girls as both heroes saving the world and individuals growing weary from repetitive tasks,” adding, “We aimed to capture both strategic battles involving the direct manipulation of barrier forms and the stories of magical girls whose emotions are wearing away.”

‘Very Positive’ Immediately After Launch… Smooth Start Thanks to Favorable User Reviews

‘Dear Magical Girls’ is a story-driven single-player game distributed completely free of charge. It is also notable that all content can be enjoyed for free without any separate paid DLC or in-app purchases.

Overseas media outlets assessed that this approach is a rare case in Steam’s free-to-play category, where multiplayer-focused microtransaction games are the mainstream.

Immediately after its release, the game received a “very positive” rating on Steam, with 98% of the 88 user reviews being positive. The game supports Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), and the development team has been consistently sharing the development process since before the release through the official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Dear Magical Girls” blends realistic themes of “labor” and “burnout” into the familiar magical girl genre. Building on the positive reviews following its free release, attention is focused on whether this title, which highlights the emotions of an ordinary person instead of a heroic tale, can write a new success story in the indie game market.
