Sublight Dev Update: Nottingham Studio’s Space Bullet Heaven Roguelite Receives Major 0.18.0 Overhaul After Steam Next Fest

    By Editorial Team2026년 07월 18일Updated:2026년 07월 19일4 Mins Read

Sublight from Nottingham-based Codebrew Software is a space bullet heaven roguelite where you command a capital warship rather than a small fighter — placing turrets, adjusting firing arcs, and combining passive upgrades to build a warship capable of surviving wave after wave of rebel fleets and alien life forms in a hostile galaxy. The Steam Next Fest demo accumulated 8,846 downloads and an 88% positive rating, and the development team responded with the 0.18.0 update on July 15, incorporating community feedback directly into the game’s systems.

    The 0.18.0 Changes

The Hunter Flagship is the update’s most significant addition. After 30 minutes of play time, a pursuing enemy warship begins tracking the player — one that accelerates in both speed and damage output the longer the player survives. This is the escalating threat mechanic that bullet heaven games use to prevent indefinite survival through attrition: the longer you last, the more dangerous the specific threat targeting you becomes. The strategic implication is that defensive capabilities and mobility become increasingly important in the late game rather than pure offensive firepower, since surviving the Hunter Flagship’s pursuit requires evading rather than simply out-damaging.

The weapon system overhaul touches multiple core components. The chaingun now penetrates multiple enemies in a line — changing its use case from single-target damage to crowd-control through columns of enemies. The autocannon now deals explosive damage — a broader area of effect at the cost of precision. The Barrage weapon class now predictively aims at target trajectories rather than firing at current positions — substantially improving hit rates against moving enemies at the cost of less intuitive aiming behavior. Ship class-specific hardpoints for weapon mounting create build constraints that reward matching weapon choices to ship characteristics rather than equipping the strongest weapons regardless of ship type.

The status effect depth additions are meaningful for build variety. Ignite stacking to five layers with new passive abilities creates a fire-focused build path that wasn’t previously viable. Cold stacking to twenty layers before triggering a freeze-then-shatter sequence creates a different tactical rhythm — slow accumulation toward a burst payoff rather than continuous damage. These aren’t parallel versions of the same mechanic; they’re different strategic approaches requiring different engagement patterns.

    The Firing Arc Design

The mechanic that most distinguishes Sublight from standard bullet heaven games is the firing arc system. Turret placement isn’t just a visual arrangement decision — each turret has a specific angular range within which it can fire, and placing turrets such that their firing arcs cover the angles from which enemies most commonly approach is a genuine spatial optimization problem.

This creates the design challenge of fleet engagements rather than just bullet-heaven dodge-and-shoot. A turret that can only fire forward is useless against enemies approaching from behind; a broadside arrangement that covers lateral approaches may leave forward and rear sectors vulnerable. As weapon types now attach to class-specific hardpoints, the placement decisions interact with weapon capability decisions — a ship class with forward-heavy hardpoints might naturally suit a forward-engagement build, while a ship with symmetric broadside hardpoints might support a different tactical approach.

    The Early Access Trajectory

Q4 2026 Early Access with a current demo at 88% positive and post-Next Fest iteration indicates a development cadence that’s responsive to player feedback while building toward a more complete product. The 0.18.0 update’s scope — a new end-game threat, weapon system overhaul, and status effect depth additions — is substantial for a demo patch, suggesting Codebrew is using the development period to build out system depth rather than just polish existing content.

For players following the game through its development, the current demo with 0.18.0 applied is substantially different from the pre-Next Fest version — which is exactly the kind of iteration that makes following indie development in progress worthwhile. The Early Access launch in Q4 will be another meaningful step, adding content and systems beyond what the demo currently contains.

The free Steam demo is available now for players who want to evaluate the current state of the firing arc system, the new Hunter Flagship threat, and the overhauled weapon types before the Early Access commitment.
