Save the Sun: 90s Anime-Style Deckbuilding Shooter ‘IKARUS’ Drops Steam Demo

    By Editorial Team2026년 05월 12일3 Mins Read
    • The Concept: A unique fusion of side-scrolling bullet hell and roguelike deckbuilding.
    • The Vision: Developed by Magical Something, the game blends high-speed arcade action with deep strategic synergy.
    • The Launch: A free demo is now available on Steam and Itch.io, with a full release for PC and Mac slated for Summer 2026.
    • The Aesthetic: A “stylized 2D” cyberpunk world heavily inspired by 90s Japanese animation.

In a world on the brink of collapse, ruled by a cold machine legion, a mythological battle to save the sun goddess Amaterasu is about to begin. Magical Something has officially released the first public demo of IKARUS, a title that challenges players to balance twitch reflexes with tactical card play.

    A Cyberpunk Mythos in Motion

IKARUS distinguishes itself with a visual identity rooted in the bold lines and futuristic grit of 90s sci-fi anime.

    • The Setting: Players navigate a world of metal and circuits, fighting through a hostile robot civilization to prevent the ultimate countdown to extinction.
    • The Audio: The game features high-tempo electronic music that escalates during intense mini-boss and giant level-boss encounters.
    • The Theme: The narrative weaves together futuristic mechanical warfare with traditional Japanese mythological elements.

The “Plan and Execute” Combat System

Unlike traditional shooters, IKARUS utilizes a two-phase combat structure that bridges the gap between different genres.

    1. The Planning Phase: Before each enemy wave, players arrange their cards in a specific order to create an offensive strategy.
    2. The Execution Phase: Players enter real-time combat where they must dodge bullets and parry attacks while their pre-set card combos activate automatically.

Players choose from three archetypes, each offering unique card colors and weapon types. For instance, using the Butterfly.exe construct allows for a build where missiles are launched every time a card is drawn, creating a screen-filling “missile festival” when combined with the right synergies.

    Progression and Scaling Challenges

Success in IKARUS is not just about survival, but also about long-term growth.

    • Persistent Progression: Players earn experience and level up even after a failed run, permanently unlocking new cards, upgrades, and skills.
    • Sacrifice Mechanics: During a run, players can choose to sacrifice specific cards to obtain powerful weapon upgrades.
    • Future Content: The full release will include an Ascension system for scaling difficulty, an Endless mode, and two additional stages with new enemy sets.

    A Bold Genre Mashup

Published by Tiny Dragon Games, IKARUS represents a shift away from standard “survivor-like” auto-shooters toward a more deliberate, strategic experience. By forcing players to think ahead in the planning phase and perform under pressure during the execution phase, the game creates a unique loop of preparation and adrenaline-fueled action.
