The Swarm Evolves: ‘Ants × Infinity’ Revealed by the Creators of Empires of the Undergrowth

    By Editorial Team2026년 04월 22일3 Mins Read
    • The Pedigree: Developed by Slug Disco, the UK-based masters of insect strategy who spent seven years perfecting Empires of the Undergrowth.
    • The Hook: A unique blend of colony management, auto-battler mechanics, and roguelite progression.
    • The Dual-Layer Strategy: Manage the intricate biological engineering of the underground nest while commanding massive swarms on the surface.
    • The Status: Steam page is now live for wishlisting, featuring as a highlight of the Earth Appreciation Festival.

If you thought Empires of the Undergrowth was the final word on ant simulation, think again. Slug Disco—the studio founded by three college friends with a shared obsession for BBC nature documentaries—is returning to the dirt with Ants × Infinity (Ants Times Infinity). This new title shifts away from traditional RTS toward a more experimental “Infinity” format, focusing on the sheer scale of thousands of ants acting as one.

    Underground Engineering meets Surface Warfare

The gameplay in Ants × Infinity is split between two distinct but deeply connected layers of strategy.

    • The Underground (The Brain): Here, you act as the architect of the colony. You’ll place and optimize Brood Chambers to produce different ant variants. By managing the Queen’s pheromones and the internal layout of the nest, you define the “stats” and composition of your army.
    • The Surface (The Brawn): Once your army is ready, it pours onto the surface. In an auto-battler fashion, your success depends on the “flow” of your swarm. You must direct thousands of ants to secure resource trails, block enemy paths, and overwhelm rivals through sheer numbers.
    • Champion Ants: Introducing a variable to the swarm, rare “Champion” units can emerge based on specific conditions or random mutations. These powerful individuals can turn the tide of a skirmish, acting as the tactical anchors for your mindless masses.

    Nature Documentary Aesthetics in 3D

Leveraging their decade of experience in “ant-tech,” Slug Disco has implemented a stylized 3D engine capable of rendering thousands of individual ants simultaneously. The visual focus is on the collective movement—the way an ant colony moves like a single, fluid organism.

The studio’s commitment to biological authenticity remains, with pheromone-based pathing and realistic foraging behaviors serving as the core of the game’s mechanics. In a surprise for the global market, the game is set to feature full audio and interface support for Korean, alongside English and other major languages.

    The Slug Disco Legacy

Since 2014, Slug Disco has carved out a unique niche in the strategy world by treating the insect kingdom with the same gravity usually reserved for grand historical empires. They aren’t just developers; they are curators of the “Nature Strategy” subgenre, having published titles like Ecosystem, Adapt, and Horticular.

With Ants × Infinity, the team is looking to bridge the gap between hardcore simulation and the high-replayability of modern roguelites. While a firm release date hasn’t been set, the hype within the “Ant-keeping” and strategy communities is already crawling to a fever pitch.
