Skill-Based Slasher Meets Extraction MMO: ‘Swordeye’ Opens Major Playtest on Steam

    By Editorial Team2026년 03월 28일3 Mins Read
    • The Solo Hustle: Developed by Alex Sutherland (ALX Theory), a one-man studio from Las Vegas.
    • The Expansion: Introduces the “Overworld,” a 30-player MMO map with dynamic world events.
    • The Social Factor: New Proximity Voice Chat allows for instant alliances or tactical taunting.
    • The Risk: High-stakes extraction mechanics—lose your gear if you fall outside safe zones.

Las Vegas-based solo developer Alex Sutherland is proving that you don’t need a massive team to build a massive world. His project, Swordeye (formerly known as Swordai), has officially entered its most ambitious playtest phase yet, blending high-skill directional swordplay with the adrenaline of an extraction looter.

The Overworld: A New Horizon for Swordplay

The star of this test is the Overworld, a sprawling 3D environment that transitions the game from a corridor-focused dungeon crawler into a true MMO experience. Each server supports up to 30 players, who can choose to cooperate during massive siege events at the central “Keep” or hunt each other for high-tier loot in the wilds.

The game’s core combat remains its “directional” system, where players must manually aim their swings and parries. This skill-based approach ensures that victory is determined by player proficiency rather than just gear stats.

High Risk, High Reward: The Extraction Loop

Swordeye utilizes a “border” system to manage tension:

    • The Safe Zone: Located near the center, where players can learn the ropes with minimal item loss.
    • The Outlands: As you push toward the edges of the map, the loot quality skyrockets—but so does the danger. Dying here means losing everything you’re carrying, returning you to your last “Bind Stone” with nothing but your pride.

20 Hours of Dark Fantasy Content

Beyond the open fields, players can discover Red Portals that lead to the “Tower,” the game’s classic dungeon-climbing mode. With the addition of Proximity Voice Chat, the social dynamics of these runs have changed entirely; players can now negotiate truces over found chests or coordinate defense against waves of NPCs in real-time.

    The Visionary Behind the Blade

Alex Sutherland founded ALX Theory with a simple goal: “Make the game I actually want to play.” By combining the intense melee mechanics of titles like Mordhau with the addictive loop of Escape from Tarkov, Sutherland is carving out a unique niche in the indie fantasy space.

Players can sign up for the playtest directly on the Steam store page to experience the 20+ hours of content currently available in the Overworld and the Tower.
