▶ An open-world city-building sandbox game combining strategy, survival, and construction
▶ 40% off Steam & Xbox, 25% off PS5… Launch promotion underway
Brimstone Games , a multinational remote development studio based in Sweden, officially released the chaotic city-building sandbox game ‘Overthrown’ as version 1.0 on March 18.
It has been released as the full edition on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X after concluding Early Access, and this marks its first release on Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5. It is currently available for purchase at a 40% discount on Steam and Xbox, and a 25% discount on PS5.
Monarch Wearing the Crown of Souls… A Sandbox Combining Survival and Expansion
Overthrone is an open-world city-building game where you become a monarch wielding an ancient crown that absorbs souls and build a kingdom in the wilderness. It supports single-player mode as well as cooperative play for up to six players.
The gamer must cultivate farmland and gather resources to grow the kingdom to a self-sufficient level, while fending off attacks from bandit groups and mutated creatures. As the kingdom’s reputation grows, more residents gather, but along with it, more powerful threats also increase.
“Fluid movement system reminiscent of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”
Overthrow has put particular effort into its movement system. Charged running allows for rapid movement across land as well as water, and the physics-based system, which enables consecutive jumps through precise timing, offers a light and agile control experience. In particular, close-quarters combat utilizing various weapons such as spears, swords, hammers, greatswords, and shields seamlessly connects with movement, enhancing the fun of the action.
Game media CGMagazine praised the combination of boost running and charge jumping regarding the game’s movement system, stating that it “is reminiscent of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.” “Physics-based interactions, such as lifting and throwing objects with the power of the crown, create unique fun,” they mentioned.
Users in the Steam community also left praise, saying, “Movement is natural, and the fresh gameplay distinct from existing city-building games is impressive,” and “Thanks to the understated art style, my eyes don’t get tired even after playing for a long time.”
The core of 1.0 is the ‘Airship Update’… He who rules the skies rules the kingdom.
The Airship update released with the launch of 1.0 expands the game’s battlefield into the sky. Gamers can build airships to attack enemy bases from the air, but high maintenance costs require them to choose a strategic balance between power and sustainability.
Along with this, three new enemies—the Scrapper, Ringleader, and Firestarter—and the giant creature Devourer, which swallows entire buildings, have been added. Three new areas emphasizing altitude differences and aerial combat have also been revealed.
Steam ‘divided’ reviews… Multiplayer strengths are clear
Currently, Steam user reviews are a mix of positive and negative. Some reviews point out issues with NPC pathing, a lack of tutorials, and complex systems as barriers to entry. On the other hand, there are also many opinions stating that “playing with friends makes for a completely different kind of fun” and “its true value is revealed in cooperative play.”
Overseas media outlets also offered various reviews. Rock Paper Shotgun described it as “a game that adds the fun of destruction to city-building,” GamesRadar as a “distinctive sandbox game,” and Vice as a “fast-paced farming and survival game.”
Overthrone is a game with a scope so vast that it is hard to believe it is the work of a small indie team. While the single-player mode shows areas that need improvement, such as a somewhat high barrier to entry and issues with NPC pathing, the cooperative multiplayer mode for up to six players maximizes chaos and excitement, leading to reviews that it comes closest to the fun the development team aimed for.
With the Airship update expanding the battlefield to the skies, attention is focused on how far Overthrow will raise its level of completeness by consistently using community feedback as a stepping stone even after version 1.0.
