From the birth of a million wishlists to the “AI Slop” controversy, the hottest week ever.

The first Steam Next Fest of 2026 is taking place from February 23rd to March 2nd (3 AM KST on March 3rd).

Featuring over 3,500 free demos, this event is Valve’s flagship indie game festival, held three times a year (February, June, and October). It provides developers with a chance to gather pre-release feedback and create wishlists, while gamers can preview some of the year’s hidden gems.

This year’s event was particularly impressive in both scale and buzz. One indie title surpassed a million wishlists, while several games boasted stunning graphics that made you wonder if they were truly indie games. A number of notable names from the Korean indie scene also participated.

The biggest hit is “Windrose,” which surpassed 1 million wishlists.

The title that garnered the most attention at the event was undoubtedly Windrose . This open-world pirate survival game developed by Windrose Crew topped the Steam demo play charts immediately after its demo release . Its peak concurrent player count exceeded 22,000 , and the cumulative wishlist exceeded 1 million during the event. This figure surpasses major titles like Phantom Blade Zero and Marathon.

The game features a ship hijacked by pirates and stranded on a deserted island, where players must gather resources to rebuild their ship and base. It supports up to four-player cooperative play, and Soulslike-style boss battles are a key element. The demo alone offers four to six hours of gameplay, and positive word-of-mouth is spreading, leading to a daily increase in players.

PC Gamer said, “The sound of my colleagues singing along to the boat song keeps ringing in my ears and I can’t turn away,” and “I’ve already poured seven hours into the demo alone.”

After surpassing 1 million wishlists, fans were eagerly anticipating a release date announcement, but the development team took a cautious stance, stating, “Please wait until we’ve made it even better. We’ll announce it when we’re confident in its quality.” The game will be released exclusively for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The Return of ZA/UM, ‘Zero Parades: For Dead Spies’

Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, a new game from studio ZA/UM , founded by the creators of Disco Elysium, is also a key feature of the event.

The previous game, Disco Elysium, broke the combat-centric RPG formula and focused on dialogue, choice, and inner conflict. Its narrative structure, which relies on language and thought, was praised for broadening the expressive scope of the RPG genre.

This new work also chose the spy RPG genre, It maintains a gloomy, conversational setting, a text-driven narrative, and a structure focused on dialogue and mystery. It inherits the narrative density and atmosphere of its predecessor, while expanding upon it with a new worldview.

The game is scheduled for release in 2026, and if you enjoyed the previous installment, this one will leave a strong impression that will make you want to check it out as well.

This year’s Steam Next Fest also featured a significant number of entries from Korean developers. Among the approximately 3,500 entries, Korean titles stood out, boasting distinct individuality in both genre and worldview.

Overall, the Korean titles participating in this event are challenging themselves to impress global users by combining traditional Korean elements with the genre (Deckland and Stardust), showcasing high-quality visuals in a hand-drawn art style (Solateria), and fast-paced action (Rerodian).

Since participation in Steam Next Fest is only allowed once per game, all domestic titles participating in this event have chosen the optimal timing as determined by their developers.

The flood of AI-generated ‘click( Slop ) game controversy

Despite the buzz and anticipation surrounding this event, serious concerns within the gaming industry are looming. Many of the over 3,500 demos featured were low-quality titles heavily utilizing generative AI.

Kotaku was blunt in their criticism, saying that “AI slop is clogging the pipes,” while Finger Guns also pointed out that “it’s becoming increasingly difficult for small, authentic teams to get noticed.”

Because Steam’s algorithm prioritizes games that have already achieved sales or garnered attention, the problem of high-quality titles being overlooked is worsening each year. To preserve the original purpose of NextFest, it’s more important than ever for players to actively participate in demos, add to wishlists, and write reviews.

In this trend, Korean indie developers are increasingly required to go beyond simple participation and instead create a strategy that leaves a strong impression with a differentiated concept and high-quality demos.

Steam Next Fest 2026 February will conclude on March 2nd (3:00 AM KST, March 3rd). After the event, a wrap-up page will be released, listing the most-played demos. Some demos will remain available after the event.

Steam Next Fest, where thousands of demos are released simultaneously, is more than just an experiential event. For small, unknown studios, it’s a direct window into the global market and a stage to test the potential of projects they’ve been preparing for years. The significance of this event is significant, as a single wishlist entry or review from a gamer can lead to the next step for a developer.

For indie studios, especially from Korea and other countries, this event represents their first opportunity to connect with a global audience. If they can establish their presence with a distinctive concept and a high-quality demo, Next Fest will become more than just a promotional opportunity; it will be the starting point for new opportunities.

Even among 3,500 competing entries, true gems are eventually discovered. And waiting for that moment of discovery is precisely why indie game enthusiasts keep an eye on Next Fest.
