- A B-grade horror arcade featuring 1980s-style graphics and synthwave music
- City attack action by an alien life form that grows larger while devouring people and buildings
Publisher Pantaloon and developer Tyrmä Games officially released the new arcade survival ’em up title ‘ROLLA’ on Steam on October 13.
‘Lola’ stands out for its unique and intuitive gameplay. Players control a fleshy monster that rolls through the city, devouring buildings and people as it grows larger and larger.
The core fun element is that the monster indiscriminately devours buildings and fleeing people in its path, growing larger and larger in proportion to the mass it absorbs. You can enjoy exhilarating destructive action as you swallow the entire city while dodging obstacles raining down from all directions.
Rolling, eating, and growing… A fleshy monster sweeping through the city
‘Lola’ is a horror arcade destruction game inspired by B-movies. According to the Steam store page, the premise involves an alien monster escaping from a human containment facility and wreaking havoc across the world. Humans simply call the monster, which rolls, eats, and destroys, ‘Lola’.
The player controls Lola, a pink, fleshy monster, to destroy buildings and devour people. As she eats, she grows larger, eventually becoming massive enough to rise above buildings. As the monster grows, the scale of destruction increases.
Humans attempt to stop Lola using bullets, missiles, and flames. However, the developers side with the monster, asking, “Is the monster really a villain?” Heikki Sillanpää of Türmä Games summarized the core flow of the game as “Roll, eat, grow, and repeat.”
Six cities, different goals and score competitions in each city
The release version features six destructible cities. Each city has a unique objective, and players can compete for scores against other players on an online leaderboard. It is designed to be controlled using a keyboard or mouse, as well as a gamepad.
Overseas media outlet GamingOnLinux reported that the previously released demo includes missions, collectibles, and mutant power-ups to aid in survival. The developer also stated that Steam Deck optimization has been completed.
Breaking news direction and synthwave soundtrack
The game begins with breaking news. The Steam store page introduces the game’s situation through a broadcast stating that an unidentified creature has appeared in the city center and caused massive damage. Visually, it features a retro 1980s style, and synthwave music by DKSTR enhances the game’s atmosphere.
Simple concept well-received… Difficulty in the latter half is disappointing
‘Lola’ was officially released after a Steam demo and a game showcase. In a July article, the Spanish media outlet Vandal described the game as an arcade survival game that is the most gruesome and disgusting reinterpretation of ‘Katamari’.
The Wand Report, an international media outlet that published a review immediately after release, praised the game for implementing a simple concept with wicked wit. However, they noted that the addictive fun of the early stages does not last until the end of the game due to the high demands of the later levels.
‘Lola’ is priced at $7.99 and is on sale for 15% off until October 23 to celebrate its Steam release. It is a B-grade horror arcade game worth checking out for users who enjoy the thrill of rapidly growing in size and destroying cities, as well as score competition.
The simple yet highly addictive ‘Lola’ is currently available for purchase and download on the Steam store page.
