Magic Puncher Games announced that it will officially release ‘Sunken Realms’, an action RPG dungeon crawler developed by one person for six years, on Steam on September 18.
The selling price is $16.99 (approximately 20,000 won), with £13.99 in the UK and €16.99 in Europe. A 10% discount will also be offered for the first two weeks after launch. The free demo currently available is scheduled to end on September 21, so users who wish to try the game early should hurry.
‘Sunken Realms’, a dungeon crawler featuring roguelike elements, is garnering significant attention from global genre fans, with over 30,000 people adding it to their Steam wishlist ahead of its release.
An adventure chasing the truth about his father in a cursed underground city
Aedaria, the setting of the game, is an underground city that has been plunged into deep darkness decades ago due to a curse from the gods. It has long been considered a forbidden land due to rumors that it “swallows everyone who passes by,” but a new narrative begins as adventurers gather there to claim its immense wealth and unknown secrets.
The player takes on the role of Alric, a young man tracking down the truth behind his father’s whereabouts, and must explore self-made dungeons, fight enemies, and collect loot.
The dungeon’s rooms and paths are procedurally rearranged each time you enter, providing a different exploration experience every time. Resources obtained from the dungeon can be brought back to the camp on the surface and used to craft weapons and armor or combine potions, or to enhance your stats through the ‘Soul Forge’.
Enhanced equipment and abilities serve as a stepping stone to facing more powerful enemies and acquiring higher-tier rewards. The game features a core growth structure where characters are nurtured by constantly moving between so-called ‘camps’ and ‘dungeons’.
Adding elements of ‘Hadis’ and ‘Zelda’ to the adventure vibe of ‘Outward’
Developer Brad Warren cited ‘Outward’ as the reason he decided to create his own game. He explained that the sense of adventure and exploration of the unknown world he experienced in ‘Outward’ inspired his game development.
Warren stated that while ‘Sunken Realms’ evolved in its own direction during the development process, he hoped that the spirit of adventure of ‘Outward’ would remain in the work.
In addition, the game’s worldview and gameplay structure were constructed by combining the storytelling of ‘Hades’ with the exploration elements of the ‘Legend of Zelda’ series. The personal stories shared by two friends around a campfire and the original score were also introduced as elements that enhance the game’s atmosphere and immersion.
A project completed alone over six years while working as an animator
‘Sunken Realms’ is a project developed alone over approximately six years by Brad Warren, who leads Magic Puncher Games.
Warren completed the game while simultaneously working as an animator and developer on the space MMO ‘Star Atlas’ during the development period. In essence, he continued development for an extended period while juggling his main job and personal project.
The game features a total of 109 handcrafted rooms spread across six zones. A structure has been implemented where each room is procedurally rearranged whenever entering a dungeon, allowing players to experience new exploration paths even during repeated playthroughs.
The development process itself is also attracting attention in that the game has built a substantial amount of content despite being a one-person development project.
Wishlist triples since announcement, interest rising steadily
‘Sunken Realms’ recorded over 10,000 items on the Steam Wishlist when its release date was announced on August 24. Since then, interest has grown rapidly, and it has now surpassed 30,000 items ahead of its official launch.
It means the wishlist has increased nearly threefold in about two weeks since the release date was announced.
‘Sunken Realms’ is an action RPG dungeon crawler that combines a growth structure involving procedurally rearranged dungeons and camps with a personal story of tracking down the truth about one’s father. Notably, another notable feature of the game is that it was completed over six years by a single developer balancing their main job with development.
Attention is focused on how this new title, which has emerged as a highly anticipated game with 30,000 wishlist entries, will perform after its official launch on the 18th. Additionally, with the free demo available for early access set to end on September 21, users considering playing should not miss this remaining opportunity right after the official release.
