What happens if the boundary between love and obsession collapses? ‘Yandere Virus,’ a cooperative horror game currently under development by the Korean indie studio Mocasphere (Nstar Cube , CEO Park Jun-su) using IP from SCON, a company specializing in VTubers, is garnering attention at Steam Next Fest.
The game begins when Majet, Moa, Bukuki, Hajiyu, and Heeji from the VTuber group ‘Meechu’ become infected with an unidentified yandere virus. The player must survive while escaping the pursuit of those consumed by obsession.
At Steam Next Fest, held from June 15 to 22, ‘Yandere Virus’ ranked 43rd in Popular Upcoming among approximately 4,400 entries and 4th in the Subculture category based on the Animation tag.
During the event, approximately 15,000 new wishlists were added, bringing the total to over 30,000, and the official release is scheduled for August 18, 2026, via Steam.
The Meeting of VTubers and Horror… An Unusual Combination of Animation Sensibilities and Horror
The biggest feature of ‘Yandere Virus’ is its unique atmosphere, which combines the familiar character traits typical of VTubers with the tension of horror games.
The members of Michu infected with the virus maintain their usual cute and lovable appearances while revealing distorted affection and obsession as they relentlessly pursue the player. The unique direction, where familiarity and horror coexist, is considered the game’s core appeal.
The game takes place in a Halloween-themed space centered around a graveyard, where mutated plants scattered throughout threaten the player, heightening the tension. Additionally, a proximity voice chat system is implemented, enabling real-time communication between players. The sweet yet eerie voice acting of the infected characters creates a unique atmosphere that blends horror and comedy.
Platonic Pump Collect Platonic Pumpkins … Lethal Company Sentimental Co-op Loop
The goal of the game is simple yet clear. Up to four players must cooperate to collect ‘Platonic Pumpkins’ hidden throughout the map and use them to craft a cure. Afterward, they must treat their infected teammates and successfully escape together.
Players must overcome not only the pursuit of infected VTuber characters but also the threat of mutant plants scattered throughout the environment. Survivors must secure an escape route through cooperation and communication, while the infected take on the role of hunting survivors while displaying a twisted affection.
Among fans, the unique concept that combines VTuber culture and yandere sensibilities with a cooperative survival structure reminiscent of ‘Lethal Company’ is being evaluated as a differentiating factor. Character customization elements are also one of the factors that add to the game’s fun.
Ranked 4th in Subculture at Next Fest… A Surprising Achievement for K-Indie Games
It has been confirmed that Mitchu-affiliated VTubers Majet, Moa, Bukuki, Hajiyu, and Heeji will appear in ‘Yandere Virus,’ and additional characters are scheduled to be revealed sequentially in the future.
In particular, it is noteworthy that it ranked 4th in the Steam Next Fest Subculture (Anime Tag) category, competing against works from major developers. It garnered attention in the domestic game community by ranking in the top tier following Bandai Namco’s ‘Echoes of Aincrad’, Hound13’s ‘Dragon Sword’, and Load Complete’s ‘Void Diver’.
The industry regards this as an even more meaningful achievement, given that a Korean one-person development team has stood shoulder to shoulder with works from major publishers.
New releases every 5 months… Mocasphere’s ‘snack game’ strategy
Mocasphere is a one-person indie game brand operated by N-Star Cube. The development team consistently releases titles that offer short and intense experiences, branding themselves as “B-grade subculture snack games.”
The studio’s core strategy is a rapid development cycle of about 5 months, a manageable playtime of around 2 hours, and a reasonable pricing policy of 5 to 7 dollars.
‘Yandere Virus’ is also a work that inherits this direction, and it tested user reactions by releasing a demo version at PlayXpo 2026 held last May.
Park Jun-su, CEO of N Star Cube, stated, “During Steam Next Fest, more users than expected played the game and left feedback,” adding, “We will improve the shortcomings and add more diverse content before the official launch to present a satisfying cooperative horror game.”
Interest is growing in whether ‘Yandere Virus,’ which combines cute VTuber characters, the subculture code of yandere, and the cooperative horror genre, can turn the buzz surrounding Next Fest into actual box office success.
