▶ Dark Fantasy Dungeon Crawler by Scottish 3-Person Team 8BitSkull
▶ Combining roguelike elements with real-time auto-battle… A strategic match to finish in 20 minutes
Scottish indie studio 8BitSkull is releasing the auto-battler dungeon crawler ‘Skull Horde’ on Steam on April 10. It also supports Steam Deck and Linux.
The developer has released ‘Bore Blasters’, ‘Void Scrappers’, and ‘Fates of Ort’, and has built a loyal fanbase by harmonizing arcade vibes with deep build systems in each title.
A Skeleton Necromancer’s Revenge… Unique Setting Catches Attention
Skull Horde begins with a unique premise in which a ‘flying skeleton necromancer,’ betrayed by his own body, leads an undead army on a journey to take revenge.
The game progresses in a roguelike structure with 20-minute intervals, where players traverse procedurally generated dungeons to collect various loot and complete challenges. Notably, it combines the dark fantasy dungeon crawler aesthetic, inspired by Diablo 2, with the auto-battler genre.
Buying and combining are both strategies … Build-centric gameplay
Battles in the game take place in real-time, with minions automatically fighting enemies. Instead of directly intervening in combat, players must focus on the role of developing their units, selecting movement paths and camera angles, and devising the right growth strategies.
You can purchase various units before the battle begins, and collecting multiple identical units allows you to synthesize them into a higher form. Enhanced units become a core force in battle through their unique abilities.
Loot found in dungeons interacts with units’ classes and tags to create powerful synergies. Devising strategies using resources and designing well-structured builds are the core fun of the game.
Diablo II Inspiration… Dark Fantasy Completed in Pixel Art
As the development team has stated that they were inspired by the Necromancer class in Diablo 2, the game is heavily permeated with the atmosphere of a dark and gloomy underground dungeon.
The whispers of the dead linger in the underground tomb, and the texture of the battlefield where bone and flesh clash is meticulously rendered in pixel art. This direction goes beyond mere retro aesthetics to visually and convincingly convey the eerie atmosphere of the world.
Skull Horde maintains an exquisite balance between cute pixel art and a dark worldview, creating a deep dungeon atmosphere that is easily accessible to everyone yet never lighthearted.
Proven quality from the previous work… The strength of the three-person Scottish development team
8BitSkull is an indie Scottish studio consisting of three members: lead developer Alex, music and sound designer Chris, and visual design designer Andy.
They have consistently built a fanbase by showcasing distinctive works such as Bore Blaster, Void Scrapers, and Fates of Oat. Their previous works were on Metacritic average It consistently received recognition for its quality, receiving ‘generally favorable’ evaluations in the 83–87 point range.
In particular, Boar Blaster, released in March 2024, received a positive response on Steam and established itself as the studio’s flagship title, while Void Scrapers, released in 2022, expanded its platforms to Steam, GOG, and Nintendo Switch, driving the studio’s growth.
Skull Horde has improved its quality through active communication with the community during the Early Access period. This culture of active communication is a strength that has been consistently maintained across 8BitSkull Studio’s previous titles, which is why continuous updates and improvements are expected even after the official launch.
The game supports 9 languages, including Korean, English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese. More information can be found on the Steam page (store.steampowered.com/app/3199360).
