Repairing Souls in a Neon Night: A Look at ‘D1AL-ogue’

    By Editorial Team2026년 02월 04일Updated:2026년 02월 28일2 Mins Read

The K-indie scene is buzzing with the release of D1AL-ogue, a title that managed to rack up over 40,000 Steam wishlists despite being developed by a small team of four students. Launching for free, this “Neon Noir” puzzle game blends the atmospheric storytelling of VA-11 HALL-A with a unique circular mechanics system.

🌃 Setting the Scene: Chroma City

In a world of perpetual grey night, you aren’t a high-flying corporate agent or a street-hardened mercenary. Instead, you are the manager of a small repair clinic in the neon-lit Chroma City. Your job? Fixing E.V.E. (Electronic Vital Entities)—androids with complex personalities and even more complex problems.

    🧩 The “D1AL” Mechanism: Strategy & Rotation

The core gameplay moves away from traditional tile-matching. Using a vintage diagnostic console called the [D1AL], you must:

    • Rotate and Shift: Navigate modules on a circular grid within a limited battery capacity.
    • Upgrade & Repair: Merge three units of the same type to upgrade them to a higher tier.
    • Handle Crises: Dodge digital narcotics (glitches) and prevent volatile units from exploding mid-repair.
    • Listen & Decide: Your repair quality directly influences the stories shared by your android customers, leading to multiple narrative endings.

🎵 The AI Controversy: A Human Response

One of the most talked-about aspects of the game’s development was the decision to delay the launch to replace AI-generated music. After community feedback expressed concerns over the lack of “human touch” in a game about sentient beings, the team (CherryPicker) made a bold move:

    1. Delayed Release: Pushed the launch from Jan 30 to Feb 5.
    2. Full Replacement: Scrapped all AI-generated background music.
    3. Human Integration: Replaced the tracks with high-quality, human-composed royalty-free music to better capture the “cold, metallic loneliness” of the city.

    Why the Hype?

It’s rare to see a student project gain traction in major Japanese outlets like Famitsu. The appeal lies in the High-tech, Low-life contrast: while the puzzles are demanding, the vibe is designed to be relaxing and immersive. It’s a game about the small, quiet stories that happen in the corners of a cyberpunk dystopia.
