    ‘Why do you play indie games?’ Content Promotion Agency, 2024 Game User Survey Published

    KOCCA Publishes 2024 User Survey Reports on Games, Webtoons, Animation, and Music

    The Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) announced on January 29 that it has published its 2024 User Survey Reports, covering games, webtoons, animation, characters, and music. The 2024 Game User Survey Report is scheduled for release on December 30.

    These annual user surveys serve as a key resource for shaping domestic content industry policies and business strategies by providing reliable user statistics. The survey methodology is continuously refined to align with the rapidly evolving content industry and technological environment, ensuring higher credibility and practical applicability.

    This year’s reports include:

    • “2024 Game User Survey”
    • “2024 Webtoon User Survey”
    • “2024 Animation User Survey”
    • “2024 Character User Survey”
    • “2024 Music User Survey”

    The survey covered 14,000 participants nationwide, aged 10 to 69 (with animation and character surveys extending to ages 3 to 69). It analyzed content consumption trends, including:

    • General usage patterns
    • User experiences
    • Estimated spending on content

    Additionally, the game user survey gathered responses from 8,000 gamers, while the overall game participation rate was assessed with a broader sample of 10,000 individuals (including non-gamers).


    Key Findings from the 2024 Game User Survey

    Declining Game Participation Rate

    • The overall game participation rate (including non-gamers) over the past year was 59.9%, marking a 3 percentage point (p.p.) decline from the previous year.

    Platform Usage Trends

    Among 8,000 game users surveyed:

    • Mobile game usage increased to 91.7% (+7.1%p YoY)
    • Console game usage increased to 26.7% (+2.6%p YoY)
    • PC game usage declined to 53.8% (-7.2%p YoY)

    Average Daily Gaming Time

    • Weekday gaming time: 171 minutes (+12 min YoY)
    • Weekend gaming time: 253 minutes (+12 min YoY)

    Platform-wise, daily playtime for PC and mobile games increased, whereas console gaming time declined.


    Indie Game Usage Insights

    This year’s survey included new questions regarding indie game usage:

    • 28% of PC, mobile, and console gamers reported playing indie games.
    • Players discovered indie games through:
      • Gameplay and review videos (41%)
      • Store rankings (34%)
      • Recommendations from friends, acquaintances, or family (33.3%)

    Reasons for Playing Indie Games

    • Light and convenient gameplay (54.4%)
    • Fresh and unique themes (49.3%)
    • Simple controls (34.8%)
    • Short play sessions (22%)

    Challenges in Indie Gaming

    Players cited the following concerns:

    • Uncertainty of sequel releases (37.6%)
    • Slow game updates and bug fixes (33.3%)
    • Lack of marketing and promotion (33%)
