’90s Japanese Anime Vibe Survival Horror, ‘Signal Veil’ Unveiled

    By Editorial Team2026년 10월 07일4 Mins Read
    • The serial disappearances at Nishikawa High School, the hidden past Aki will face
    • A survival horror game where you find invisible beings using cell phone vibrations and noise.

Tokyo-based horror publisher Serafini Productions and Chilean indie studio Time Hunters have unveiled the third-person survival horror game ‘Signal Veil’ .

This game unfolds psychological horror and an emotional story through visual direction reminiscent of 1990s animation.

The game is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). Along with the game announcement, a first reveal trailer was also unveiled, and you can add it to your wishlist on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Epic Games Store.

The cell phone left by the missing mother and Nishikawa High School

The player takes on the role of Aki Mizuno, a teenage girl whose mother disappeared without a trace, and unfolds the story. The last thing her mother left behind is an old cell phone that responds to spiritual entities invisible to others.

A mysterious series of disappearances occurs at the seemingly ordinary Nishikawa High School. Aki must uncover the whereabouts of the vanished people and the truth about herself while digging into a past buried beneath false memories and silence. Tense exploration, ritual-like battles, and a gradually unstable mental state are at the heart of the narrative.

According to the Steam store page, Aki encounters beings with emotional wounds. Players must explore every corner of the school to find clues to the case.

90s animation-style direction and a mobile phone that detects spiritual beings

The developer stated that they combined the tension of classic survival horror games like ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Silent Hill’ with direction inspired by psychological horror anime such as ‘Another’ and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’.

The goal is to recreate the rough and eerie atmosphere of horror animations that used to air on TV at night, transforming it into a survival horror experience.

The mobile phone is Aki’s guide and virtually her only weapon. When a spiritual entity is nearby, vibrations and static occur, and the screen becomes distorted. Players can use this to pinpoint enemies before they reveal themselves, identify contaminated zones, and find invisible clues.

According to the press release, you can stun enemies with the flash of a mobile phone and reveal hidden objects and traces with the camera. It is also used to detect presences like radar or to counterattack.

Battles proceeding like a ritual and a wavering mind

Combat is far from a blind attack on enemies. The developers explained that players must go through a process of detecting and provoking enemies to stun them and reveal their true nature, and finally, permanently purifying them. With medical supplies, ammunition, and mysterious weapons scarce, and each enemy having different behavioral patterns, observation, strategy, and the utilization of the surrounding environment provide crucial clues.

Aki’s mental state also affects the progression of the game. As her mental state becomes unstable, her perception of reality becomes distorted, and the behavior of the surrounding environment and enemies changes. Consequently, Aki’s combat style becomes even more desperate. The press release stated that a fixed camera perspective was introduced to restrict the field of view and heighten tension.

New Horror Title from Chilean Indie Studio and Japanese Publisher Join Forces

Time Hunters is an independent development studio from Chile. Serafini Productions is a Tokyo-based publisher and developer founded in 2022 that collaborates with developers and partners in Japan and abroad to release PC and console games.

It is also in charge of the production and distribution of the psychological horror series ‘BrokenLore,’ which deals with human fear, trauma, and themes of modern society.

The Steam page states that the game contains potentially uncomfortable themes such as harassment, humiliation, emotional distress, and traumatic events. It also features gore elements, including nudity and corpses, as well as mild profanity. The warning text was written by the developer.

‘Signal Veil’ is a survival horror game that combines a story about chasing a missing person case with detection and combat using mobile phones. The release date has not yet been announced, and you can add the game to your wishlist on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Epic Games Store.
