- Rebuilding a village destroyed by a meteor storm… A healing RPG where you build relationships with residents and decorate your settlement
- From harvesting and crafting to village building and romance… A new challenge for narrative-driven life sims
UK indie studio Oxalis Games announced that it will release the narrative-driven cozy life sim RPG ‘Moonfrost’ on Steam Early Access on October 12 at 6 PM (UK time). This is October 13 at 2 AM in Korea.
Moonfrost tells the story of rebuilding a village destroyed by a meteor storm, rather than inheriting a farm. Players build and decorate the settlement while building relationships with the residents. The developers explained that they created a warm and cozy atmosphere using pixel graphics and original music.
Rebuilding the village under the second moon
Players become a ‘Frost Hunter’ and wield the mysterious power of Moon Frost. The main objective is to restore order to a village thrown into chaos by transforming meteorites into various structures.
The game adds a building system for constructing and decorating an entire village to the basic activities of the healing genre, such as harvesting, fishing, gathering, crafting, and cooking. The developers described the game’s direction as an experience that combines the warmth of ‘Stardew Valley’ with the depth of ‘Dragon Quest Builders’. As the village comes back to life, the stories of its residents unfold alongside it.
A choice to build relationships with residents and change the story
The core of Moonfrost is the process of building relationships with residents and restoring their homes and shops. Each resident has a distinct personality and their own story, and the player’s choices influence the surrounding characters and the world. You can even build affection with some characters and develop a romance.
The game progresses by gathering materials to craft items and construct buildings. Completing quests allows you to obtain new tools, and you can earn the funds needed for future crafting by exploring hidden temple areas and engaging in requests and trading.
Weather and day/night changes, dot graphics and music
In Moonfrost, natural elements such as weather, day-night cycles, and sleep add variation to the game world. It also features a system for managing inventory and resources. Furthermore, it supports various customization options for decorating characters, farms, and houses.
The developer introduced Moonfrost’s graphics as “next-generation pixel art.” They explained that the game was created to allow players to immerse themselves in the world by adding detailed animations and original music.
From Web3 games to premium PC games
Oxalis Games is a UK studio founded in August 2020. Initially, it raised $4.5 million in seed funding through investments from Blocore, Supercell, Animoca Brands, and others.
Moonfrost was once introduced as a Web3 game. It was initially unveiled as a Solana-based game and was later announced to join the Open Loot blockchain ecosystem. The early access conducted on Open Loot was targeted at holders of ‘Gnome Key’ NFTs.
Afterwards, the studio shifted its direction to not use Web3 or NFTs. They revamped the game with the goal of launching on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and decided to release it as a premium PC title.
Oxalis Games CEO Gina Nelson stated that she chose a direction that was not suitable for Moonfrost and listened to the community’s feedback. This Steam version does not include NFTs, tokens, or blockchain features.
The sequel ‘Tiny Dwellings’ is also in development
Oxalis Games is also preparing ‘Tiny Dwellings,’ a pixel-based cozy builder, in collaboration with Moonfrost. It is a game where players decorate small houses and dioramas using over 1,000 hand-drawn items. Featuring a lo-fi atmosphere and soft lighting, it is scheduled to participate in Steam Next Fest this fall.
