Combolands from Crux Games (Sam Alfred and Skye Scott, South Africa) launched on Steam August 24. This coverage ran a full preview in early August examining the game’s design — building placement as deckbuilding, the city as the deck, combo chains as the satisfaction delivery mechanism, 30-minute sessions, and 21 guild combinations creating run-to-run variety.
The launch content is substantially expanded from what the preview described. The full release includes 120+ buildings, 100+ passive relics, building upgrade modifiers, potion effects that alter map conditions, 13 named city councillors, and 10 difficulty ranks — enough combinatorial space to sustain extended play across the 30-minute session structure that the design is built around.
The Launch Reception
Polygon called Combolands “the best new roguelite on Steam in years.” The pre-launch demo hit 97% positive on SteamDB. YouTuber Retromation specifically cited the cozy atmosphere alongside the mechanical satisfaction. The “dopamine hit” language that preview coverage used for the combo chain visual feedback has appeared in multiple press assessments — the experience of watching a well-planned building arrangement trigger cascading synergies across the island is apparently landing as described.
Sam Alfred’s Terra Nil (BAFTA 2024 nominee, 7,000+ Very Positive Steam reviews) established that the studio can take a familiar genre’s conventions and find genuinely new design questions within them. Combolands is a different kind of question — where Terra Nil asked “what if city building was about removal rather than accumulation,” Combolands asks “what if deckbuilding’s combo satisfaction could happen through spatial building placement rather than card sequencing” — and the press reception suggests the question has an interesting answer.
Landfall support (publishers of PEAK, Content Warning, HASTE) is noted in the publishing credits, consistent with this coverage’s earlier preview noting the partnership.
Combolands is available now on Steam. English only at launch.
