A reporter’s one night trapped in a remote motel, ‘Dead Stop: No Vacancy’ launches on August 13

    • Developed by Portuguese indie studio Camel101, a first-person psychological horror with an 80s slasher vibe.
    • 90–120 minute complete playtime, supports a total of 14 languages including Korean interface and subtitles.

Portuguese indie game studio Camel 101 will officially release its new first-person psychological horror game , ‘Dead Stop – No Vacancy,’ on Steam on the 13th.

‘Dead Stop: No Vacancy’ is a first-person short horror game about a reporter’s one night isolated in a remote roadside motel. It offers a playtime of approximately 90 to 120 minutes to enhance immersion and features retro-style visuals and sound that recreate the unique atmosphere of 1980s slasher movies and VHS horror films.

The game stands out for conveying its story through objects placed within the space, notes, surrounding traces, and atmosphere, rather than through traditional cutscenes. Players discover and piece together clues themselves to uncover the truth hidden within the motel. The developer explains that the addition of sound design designed to heighten psychological tension delivers intense horror even within a short playtime.

This work is the first episode of ‘Dead Stop,’ a new short horror anthology series presented by Camel101. It supports a total of 14 languages, including Korean interface and subtitles, and is also compatible with SteamDeck.

A Reporter Who Went astray Steps into Paradise Motel

The protagonist of the game is Nancy, a determined investigative reporter. With nicotine stains on her fingertips and a knack for spotting lies, she heads to a small town called Crestfall to cover an arson case that reeks of insurance fraud and revenge.

However, on a road where not a single sign is in sight and even the GPS signal is cut off, Nanji ends up taking a wrong turn. Just as the remaining sunlight fades, the place that appears before her eyes is the ‘Paradise Motel’.

Perhaps a scoop on this case is waiting inside the motel. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that what awaits Nanji is not just a simple clue to the incident, but something far more ominous.

Using objects and traces instead of cutscenes… A short horror story focused on exploration and puzzles

‘Dead Stop: No Vacancy’ is a first-person atmospheric horror game set in the confined space of Paradise Motel. The core gameplay consists of environmental puzzles and exploration based on the dark past hidden within the motel.

The story does not unfold directly through traditional cutscenes. Instead, the truth is gradually revealed through objects and notes placed throughout the motel, as well as traces left in the surrounding environment. Players must piece together the clues they discover on their own to uncover the full story of the events that took place at the motel.

Based on the compressed setting of one woman, one building, and just one night, the development team’s goal is to eliminate unnecessary elements and provide a short yet complete horror experience.

Retro horror capturing the vibe of 80s slashers and VHS.

One of the game’s most notable features is its retro visuals inspired by 80s slasher movies and VHS horror films.

It recreates the ominous atmosphere characteristic of old horror movies through rough textures and retro visuals, and the tags registered on Steam reveal various genre elements such as suspense, mystery, psychological horror, a dark atmosphere, and supernatural elements.

Overseas media outlets are also paying attention to the distinctive atmosphere of old-school horror games felt in the work. In particular, rather than flashy graphics or large-scale production, they focused on the method of gradually pressuring the player’s psychology through the confined space of a motel.

Sound design is also a key element. The development team explained that they utilized immersive sound effects and sounds suited to the space to create a sense of unease, making players feel as though something is present nearby even without seeing it directly.

From ‘Syndrome’ to ‘Benefits’… The fourth challenge of horror specialist studio Camel101

Camel 101 is an independent game studio based in Portugal that has been developing horror games.

Representative works include the space-based survival horror game ‘Syndrome’, ‘Those Who Remain’ which deals with supernatural events, and the deep-sea horror game ‘Beneath’.

Camel101, which has showcased different styles of horror through various previous works, is launching a new short horror anthology series with ‘Dead Stop – No Vacancy’.

‘Dead Stop’ is planned to unfold with each episode featuring an independent story, and this title is the first of those episodes. Unlike lengthy, large-scale horror games, it focuses on a single location and event, making it a title tailored for gamers who want to experience intense horror within a short amount of time.

Overseas media take notice immediately after announcement… Interest in user reviews after official launch

Since the game’s reveal, international horror and indie game media outlets such as Gematsu, Bloody Disgusting, All Hallows Geek, and Retro News have highlighted the title by reporting on it. In particular, the retro vibe influenced by classic slasher movies and the short, dense structure of approximately 90 to 120 minutes were cited as key elements of interest.

A wishlist encouragement post posted on the developer’s official X (formerly Twitter) account garnered significant attention, recording over 12 million views.

A free demo version is currently available on Steam, and one Steam curator has posted a review. However, as the game has not yet been officially released, it is difficult to gauge the reactions of general users. The key point to watch for the game after its official launch will likely be how actual users evaluate its short playtime, retro-style presentation, and environment-driven storytelling.

‘Dead Stop: No Vacancy’ is a game that creates horror solely through the confined space of a cramped motel and a short, compressed story, rather than relying on large-scale content or flashy visuals. In particular, the design that allows players to personally complete the story through objects and traces is an element that differentiates it from traditional horror games.

As this is the first work in a new short horror anthology launched by Camel101, which has consistently challenged the horror genre, there is growing interest in how ‘Dead Stop – No Vacancy’ will be received after its official release on the 13th.
