- Cinematic stealth horror created by a Spanish solo developer launches simultaneously on PC and consoles on August 6
- First-person stealth horror capturing the vibe of 80s VHS slashers; hiding without combat is the only way to survive.
A writer visits a mountain cabin alone in search of inspiration. However, on a stormy night, the peaceful time turns into a nightmare with the appearance of a stranger knocking on the door. Outside the window, a murderer awaits you, standing motionless in the rain with a large logging knife and a mask covering his face.
Indie publisher JanduSoft from Barcelona, Spain, and Spanish solo developer Carlos Azuaga are releasing the first-person stealth horror game ‘Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher’ simultaneously on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series on August 6.
The work is the first chapter of the ‘Yellow Creek Stories’ series, which offers a modern reinterpretation of the sensibilities of 1980s VHS slasher movies.
Rough VHS texture, dim lighting… Horror with an 80s slasher vibe
The Cabin Watcher captures the distinctive atmosphere of 1980s slasher films with its rough screen texture reminiscent of playing an old VHS tape and dark color palette. From the silhouette of a killer standing in the rain and the dimly flickering lighting to the intense contrast of light and shadow enveloping the cabin interior, every visual element maximizes the tension.
Sound functions as a core system of gameplay, going beyond mere atmosphere. The killer reacts to every sound the player makes, the movement of light, and their path. Even the slightest sound, such as footsteps or the opening and closing of doors, can be the difference between life and death, requiring constant tension to be maintained.
In addition, through a minimal HUD and a real-time noise and visibility system, players can intuitively grasp how dangerous their actions are, and the sense of fear is conveyed even more immersively.
No combat, no retries… The only way to survive is stealth
This game features no combat system. Players cannot fight the killer, and their only way to survive is to hide or calmly assess the situation.
The killer does not simply repeat a fixed patrol route. Reactive AI is applied to change the search path based on the player’s actions, resulting in a different chase every time. Thanks to this, every encounter leads to an unpredictable psychological battle.
The stealth system is designed around sound, light, and movement. Even if you hide in the dark, loud footsteps will reveal your location, and even if you move quietly, you are exposed to danger the moment you enter a bright area. Combined with cinematic interactive direction, it goes beyond a simple stealth game to deliver a horror experience akin to watching a slasher movie firsthand.
Collaboration between a Spanish indie developer and a Barcelona publisher, JanduSoft
This project involves JanduSoft, an indie publisher based in Barcelona, Spain, publishing the debut work of solo developer Carlos Azuaga. JanduSoft introduced Azuaga as a new member of the ‘JanduSoft Family’ and expressed anticipation for the game.
Since the release announcement, interest from horror game fans has been rapidly growing. The game is receiving favorable reviews for its gameplay that combines first-person slasher and stealth elements, its pure survival structure that completely excludes combat, and its direction that faithfully recreates the atmosphere of 1980s VHS slasher movies.
Reactions in the community include comments such as “a game that feels like a fusion of ‘Outlast’ and ‘Halloween’” and “it is even scarier because there is no combat,” and as this is the first story in the series, interest is also focused on the upcoming chapters.
‘Yellow Creek Stories: The Cabin Watcher,’ which reinterprets the nostalgia of 1980s slasher movies with a modern game system, promises a unique horror experience by featuring pure stealth survival without combat and responsive AI. As the first chapter of the series, attention is also focused on what kind of story and horror the upcoming ‘Yellow Creek Stories’ will present.
