The encounter between a homeless person and a stray dog… A heartwarming adventure based on a true story, ‘Bangkok Story: The Lost Dog’

    By Editorial Team2026년 04월 27일5 Mins Read
    • A top-down 2D pixel art narrative adventure set in Thailand, inspired by a true story.
    • Featured at the Southeast Asia Game Showcase, a heartfelt debut from a small two-person development team

Shameful Guys Development, a two-person indie studio in Bangkok, Thailand, officially released the top-down 2D story adventure ‘Bangkok Story: A Stray Dog’ on Steam on April 27.

Inspired by a real-life incident in Bangkok in 2017, this game tells the heartwarming story of a homeless man who rediscovers himself through a chance encounter with a stray dog. Developer James Piyabuht Wongsahan has been conceptualizing the project since 2019, and it was finally released to the world after approximately seven years of development.

An Interview with a Famous Blogger, and Into a Man’s Memory

The game’s narrative is composed of a unique dual structure. The present time, in which a famous blogger interviews a man who was formerly homeless, acts as a frame, within which the man’s past story unfolds. What was it that turned a man into a homeless person? His family’s financial situation? The government? His friends? Or himself?

The player explores the journey of the protagonist, Boon, from his childhood to the present, unraveling the causes of his loss one by one. The game is structured so that the player directly experiences the inner suffering of a homeless man battling the cruelty of the world, starting from memories of rural Thailand and extending to the harsh life on the streets of Bangkok.

The turning point of the entire story is a stray dog exhausted by hunger. Boon discovers a starving dog on the street and shares his chicken with it. His actions, never losing his compassion for the animal even in the most difficult circumstances, become the starting point of a long journey to rediscover himself.

Pixel art recreating Bangkok’s alleyways, an emotionally evocative atmosphere

The game emotionally recreates the rural landscapes of Thailand and the streetscapes of Bangkok in a top-down 2D pixel art style based on RPG Maker. The cute and charming character designs gently wrap around a theme that could otherwise be heavy, allowing viewers to let their guard down and immerse themselves in the story.

In terms of atmosphere, nostalgia, sadness, and warmth intersect. Combined with a multi-ending structure, a narrative that stimulates contemplation on life, and interactions that allow for diverse expressions of bonding with the dog, the game creates an emotional narrative that transcends a simple adventure and leaves a deep, lingering impression. The developer noted, “Users who are sensitive to animals, friends, and family might shed tears.”

Featured in the Southeast Asia Showcase, the culmination of a project dreamed of for 7 years

The seeds of the game were sown in October 2019. It began when developer James Piyabuht Wongsahan posted a pledge on Facebook stating, “I want to create a game that can bring smiles to people.” Subsequently, the existence of the protagonist ‘Boon’ became known following its first reveal in September 2022, and it garnered its first attention after being coincidentally featured on PitchYaGame and Screenshot Saturday.

Since then, it has steadily grown its presence within the Southeast Asian indie game community, being consecutively selected for the ‘Southeast Asia Games Onward 2023 Showcase’ and the ‘NOVELASIA 2024 Showcase’. Ahead of the Steam release, a demo containing Episodes 1 and 2 was unveiled, and the development team continuously refined the game by releasing patches that incorporated player feedback leading up to launch.

Acclaimed by users and the media… “A deep resonance contained within a small story”

Since its release, the community has continued to praise the work’s authenticity and emotional depth. Representative reactions include comments such as, “Even though it is a pixel art style, the weight of the story is conveyed intact,” and “The relationship with the stray dog resonates more deeply than expected.”

In particular, the narrative based on a true story and the ending structure that changes depending on choices have been praised for enhancing player immersion. On the other hand, some users have expressed mixed opinions regarding the somewhat slow pacing and heavy atmosphere, noting that due to the game’s story-driven nature, it is a title that depends on personal taste.

The sincerity of a two-person development team… “The human heart is inherently pure”

Shameful Guys Development is a small indie studio in Bangkok, Thailand, consisting of only two members. The studio’s motto is “Human heart is innocent at its core,” and this philosophy is fully embodied throughout ‘Bangkok Story’.

The game is being developed and published entirely in-house, with plans to complete the entire story, consisting of approximately four chapters, in an episodic format. This title, which directly addresses the realistic lives and emotions of Southeast Asia, is garnering attention from indie game fans for its authentic storytelling, which is rarely found in major studios.

Bangkok Story: Stray Dog is an emotionally-driven narrative adventure that calmly portrays a human’s life and recovery, leaving players with deep empathy and a lasting impression.

Instead of flashy direction or sensational plot developments, it adds strength to the story by calmly building up everyday wounds, relationships, and the changes brought about by small choices.

In particular, the human warmth revealed through the bond with stray dogs is expected to deliver an emotional resonance that lingers in memory long after the game is finished. Players can experience the developer’s message and atmosphere in advance through the Steam demo version.
