• Indie labels take over the void left by major labels… A variety of attractions until March 29
  • PAX Rising Showcase, a stage for indie games, carefully selected from hundreds of entries

Every March, before spring has even fully arrived in Boston, gamers from around the world pack their bags and head northeast. The era of flashy AAA blockbusters is fading, and the season has come for indie games—which have quietly shone on the sidelines—to finally rise to the center stage.

Games created solely from ideas and passion, without marketing budgets of hundreds of thousands of dollars or the backing of major studios, are set up on the exhibition floors of PAX East, waiting for gamers.

A single piece of pixel art that a solo developer has poured years of nights into, a roguelike created by friends after work… PAX is the place where those small, earnest dreams meet the world for the first time.

PAX East 2026, one of the largest game festivals in North America, will be held for four days from March 26 to 29 at the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, USA.

Major names such as Nintendo, Blumhouse Games, Double Fine Productions, NIS America, GIANTS Software, and DreadXP were displayed in the large booths. In the board game sector, Magic: The Gathering, Dice Throne, and UVS Games’ Godzilla: Reign of Kaiju set up analog experience spaces within the Expo Hall.

However, the atmosphere at the venue is not entirely glamorous. An industry insider who visited PAX East 2026 stated, “Since the pandemic, trade shows in general are not what they used to be, and the days when Rockstar, Sony, and Valve dominated the venue are long gone,” noting that the event is showing a different aspect from the flashy exhibitions of the past centered on major publishers.

PAX Rising Showcase: A Stage for Carefully Selected Indie Games

The real highlight of this event is the indie game discovery program, ‘PAX Rising Showcase’.

The PAX Rising Showcase is a space established to provide small indie developers with the opportunity to stand alongside AAA titles. While hundreds of games are submitted every year, only a tiny fraction are ultimately selected. The selection criteria are based on three factors—gameplay, fun, and creativity—which are judged directly by the PAX team, regardless of genre or platform.

ShantyTown

One of the most eye-catching titles at this year’s PAX Rising is the city-building game ‘ShantyTown’ . Created by solo developer Erik Rempen, this game offers a cozy, diorama-style city-building experience, and a full playable version will be demonstrated at the PAX booth (No. 13097) ahead of its official Steam release on April 16.

Shanti Town is garnering significant attention even before its release, with over 30,000 players trying out the demo and the number of wishlists doubling during Steam Next Fest last February.

Super Blowfish Castle

‘Super Blowfish Castle,’ a puzzle platformer by developer T-LANDER STUDIOS that actively utilizes a physics engine, is also a highlight of this showcase. In this game, where you guide a small pufferfish to a castle with just a single button, it proceeds as a relaxing chaos puzzle that tests your timing and reflexes across 100 colorful levels.

The game is receiving a great response for its challenging difficulty that contrasts with its cute visuals, and is forming long queues at the event venue as it is cited as one of the “most wanted indie games to play.”

■ Project Lexa

We also cannot leave out ‘Project Lexa,’ a sci-fi language puzzle adventure developed by Ward Games. It is a story-driven sci-fi adventure game in which communications expert Lex Kelza and her crew crash-land on an unknown planet and set out to decipher an alien language to uncover the truth about a missing colony and find a way to return.

It features a structure where players decipher alien characters using an in-game translator to unlock new areas and build relationships with five crew members. It is garnering attention at the event due to the rarity of the genre as a text-based language puzzle.

Highlights for the most anticipated indie titles ‘Busby 4D’ and ‘Demon Tides’

The works that generated the most buzz among indie fans at PAX East 2026 were ‘Bubsy 4D’ and ‘Demon Tides’ .

Busby 4D, currently under development by indie studio Fabraz, is the seventh installment in the series and the first 3D title to be released in 30 years. An overseas media outlet covering the event praised it, stating, “It features smoother and more intuitive platforming, more cohesive art, and more delightful humor than its predecessor, Demon Tides, and may even surpass the original IP.”

Released on Steam on February 19, Demon Tides was priced at $24.99 and was praised as “the best 3D platformer game since Super Mario Odyssey,” receiving positive reviews for its vibrant art style capturing the vibe of 2000s video games, dynamic soundtrack, and free movement system.

Buoyed by the overwhelmingly positive response immediately after launch, the 1.1 update, which adds New Game Plus mode and Randomization mode, was also recently released.

Gravity Korea Participates in PAX for 4th Consecutive Year… Exhibiting 12 Titles

Korean game companies are also making their presence felt at PAX East 2026. Gravity Co., Ltd. is participating in PAX for the fourth consecutive year and showcasing 12 indie titles.

The three representative titles leading the booth are the fantasy world guild management simulations ‘Galvatein: Adventurers’ Guild’, ‘LIGHT ODYSSEY’, and ‘Hashire Hebereke EX’.

To coincide with the PAX East weekend, a 40% discount event on previously released titles on Steam is also being held. Park Jin-on, Business Team Lead at Gravity, stated, “Our goal is to allow local North American gamers to experience firsthand the unique and high-quality indie titles we have discovered.”

Abundant content off-stage as well… from panels and concerts to Omegaton

Various side programs will also be held during the event. Developer IllFonic will host a panel on the asymmetric stealth horror game ‘Halloween,’ and John Carpenter, the director of the original 1978 film, will participate online.

The concert features indie pop artists mxmtoon and Sixth Station Trio, and offers a variety of attractions, including community events such as a cosplay gathering celebrating the 30th anniversary of Resident Evil.

PAX East 2026 has once again proven the fact that hundreds of indie studios are quietly filling the void left by major publishers.

As long as there are teams like Fabraz that do not rest on the success of their previous works but constantly pursue the next challenge, and publishers like Gravity that cross the Pacific to bring the games they believe in, Boston’s spring will continue to be remembered as the season of indie games.

Some of the names we encountered for the first time at this year’s exhibition may soon become the titles we speak most frequently. It may be a bit premature, but the fact that it has sparked such expectations is reason enough to look forward to next year’s PAX East.
