- A combination of hand-drawn 2D animation and timing-based combat
- A 2D animated RPG that adds Latin American culture to the classic JRPG vibe
Brazilian indie studio Asteristic Game Studio unveiled the 2D turn-based RPG ‘Toada Brava’ and launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.
Inspired by classic JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Bagrant Story, this title combines hand-drawn 2D animation-style visuals with a timing-based combat system, set in a fantasy world inspired by the landscapes and cultures of Latin America. It is currently available for wishlisting on the Steam page.
A rebellion beginning with a prison escape… The journey of the boy Kako
The protagonist, Kako, is a boy living an ordinary life on a ranch with his mother, Matilda. Then one day, the infamous Duke Santacrúz appears to seize the land for gold mining.
When an enraged Matilda punches the Duke in the face and is dragged away to prison, Kako breaks into the Duke’s estate to rescue her mother but ends up locked in a cold cell. In prison, Kako gathers a team of ragtag heroes and attempts to escape for freedom.
Concise yet deep combat system , aiming for “short and dense fun”
Combat begins immediately without any transitions, and the effectiveness of both offense and defense varies depending on timing. Hitting the precise timing allows you to deal greater damage or reduce the damage taken.
Magic is an area-of-effect attack cast through musical instruments, and spells must be strategically placed to strike multiple enemies simultaneously. Another feature is that the combat style varies significantly depending on the party composition.
The development team aims for a dense experience rather than a vast amount of playtime. They explain that they intend to create a game that emphasizes the efficiency of ‘fun’ through a structure focused on core enjoyment, instead of unnecessarily long and tedious content.
Hand-drawn 2D animation , A JRPG with the flavor of Latin America
Asteristic Game Studio is a small indie studio based in Curitiba, Brazil, and has released titles such as ‘Dreaming Sarah’, ‘Dandy & Randy’, and ‘DekaDuck’.
Inspired by Cuphead in 2017, developer Mateus Grazina aimed to create an “anime-like RPG.” Based on a world drawn from the cultures and landscapes of Latin America, including Brazil, the game implements a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from existing JRPGs. The developer stated, “Our goal is to create a fantasy world with our own distinct style.”
Toada Brava began full-scale development in 2020 and has continued for over four years with the enthusiastic support of fans. More information about the game can be found on the Steam page (store.steampowered.com/app/4253580) and the Kickstarter page.
