Vengeance of the Floating Skull: ‘Skull Horde’ Brings Diablo II Vibes to the Autobattler Genre this April

        By Editorial Team2026년 03월 21일Updated:2026년 04월 11일3 Mins Read
        • The Vibe: A dark fantasy dungeon crawler heavily inspired by Diablo II’s Necromancer class.
        • The Hook: Lead an undead army as a sentient flying skull seeking revenge on its own former body.
        • The Loop: Fast-paced, 20-minute roguelike runs featuring real-time auto-battles and strategic unit merging.
        • Release Date: April 10, 2026, on PC (Steam) with full Steam Deck support.

If you’ve ever spent hours in Diablo II meticulously raising a skeleton army only to wish they’d just handle the heavy lifting while you focused on the “big picture” strategy, Scottish indie studio 8BitSkull has a gift for you. Their latest project, Skull Horde, is set to rise from the grave next month, blending the grim aesthetics of classic dungeon crawlers with the tactical depth of a modern autobattler.

        A Bone-Chilling Quest for Revenge

The premise of Skull Horde is as “metal” as it gets. You play as a sentient floating skull that has been betrayed and abandoned by its own body. To reclaim your physical form—or at least get a very messy revenge—you must lead an ever-growing legion of the damned through procedurally generated catacombs.

The game captures the “dark, damp, and dangerous” feel of 90s ARPGs through detailed pixel art, where the whispers of the dead and the clatter of bone on steel create a thick, gothic atmosphere.

The “CEO of the Undead” Gameplay

In Skull Horde, you aren’t clicking on enemies; you’re managing a corporate-sized army of skeletons.

        • Real-Time Autobattling: Your minions engage enemies automatically. Your role is strategic: managing movement, choosing the optimal path through the dungeon, and timing your power spikes.
        • Merge to Evolve: Strategy starts at the shop. Buying identical units allows you to merge them into elite, high-tier forms. These evolved units come with game-changing abilities that act as the backbone of your offense.
        • Synergy-Driven Builds: The loot you scavenge interacts with unit “classes” and “tags.” Finding the right relic to boost your “Skeleton Archers” or “Rotting Mages” can turn a struggling mob into an unstoppable tidal wave of bone.

        The Track Record of 8BitSkull

This isn’t the first rodeo for the three-man Scottish team (Alex, Chris, and Andy). They’ve built a loyal following with titles like Bore Blasters (2024) and Void Scrappers (2022), consistently hitting Metacritic scores in the 83-87 range. Their hallmark is “arcade simplicity meets deep complexity,” and Skull Horde looks to be the culmination of that philosophy.

With its “just one more run” energy and deep respect for the dark fantasy roots of the genre, Skull Horde is positioning itself as the perfect snack for strategy fans who like their games a little more macabre.
