Publishers Silver Lining Interactive, Fat Alien Cat, and Nomo Studio announced on March 17 that they will release their new game ‘Momento’ on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam) in the second quarter of 2026.
Momento is a narrative adventure game that combines a healing sensibility with a branching narrative, featuring a unique concept where the process of decorating a childhood room and choosing which items to keep and which to throw away changes the course of one’s life.
Childhood choices change your entire life… A life narrative led by objects
The core of Momento starts with a simple yet emotional question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Gamers experience how the direction of their future lives changes as they decorate a room in their childhood and arrange and select items. The story changes depending on which items are kept and which are discarded, and these choices lead directly to the consequences of their lives.
The game aims to tell a story of self-reflection. It offers the experience of rediscovering the simple joys of childhood and looking back on the difficult moments of life that everyone has gone through. After completing the game, you can return to the beginning to explore new endings and various branching paths, experiencing themes such as love and loss from multiple perspectives.
There are no wrong choices… Every playthrough is a single story.
Momento does not demand a specific correct answer. You may hang everything upside down, or discard everything without leaving anything behind. There are no wrong choices, and various arrangements and choices lead to different stories.
A ‘Creative Mode’ is also provided, allowing you to freely customize your own room by petting pets such as cats, dogs, and lizards, and arranging lighting, wallpaper, furniture, and props. If you find all the hidden Easter eggs and puzzles, you can also discover a hidden ending.
Charming visuals and a meditative atmosphere… The Steam demo is ‘overwhelmingly positive’
The demo unveiled at Steam February Next Fest received an “overwhelmingly positive” response from gamers, who praised its emotional atmosphere, delicate interactions, and heartfelt narrative.
Reviews continued that the charming objects filling the colorful and vibrant rooms, the lighting and atmosphere that change with the flow of the day, and the small interactions felt when stroking a cat’s fur create a meditative sense of immersion.
The first collaborative work by a three-person Australian development team from the animation and VFX industry
Momento is a work created through a collaboration between two Australian companies based in Brisbane, Fat Alien Cat and Nomo Studio.
Three developers participated: Jazmin Phillips (Art Lead), Jessica Lyon (Narrative Lead), and Julian Vavor (Technical Lead). It is noteworthy that all three are parent developers balancing childcare with game development. Coming from the animation and VFX industries, they are combining over 15 years of experience in the game, video, and animation sectors to complete this project.
The goal of Fat Alien Cat and Nomo Studio is clear: to create small, warm, and enjoyable games that allow gamers to escape the stresses of life, catch their breath, and reflect. Momento, crafted in spare moments amidst the busy daily lives of three developers balancing development and parenting, is in itself a quiet tribute to the small moments of life.
Community reaction… “It’s a protest, but I’m already crying”
On Steam and social media, positive reviews regarding the emotional experience continued, with comments such as “I didn’t know choosing a single item could be this emotional,” “It’s just a demo, but I almost cried,” and “It is calm yet leaves a deep lingering impression.”
It appears that the fact that the quiet process of selecting items and filling a room evokes one’s own memories and emotions, even without any special events, left a deep impression on gamers. Furthermore, overseas users reacted positively to the news of localization support for 10 languages, including Korean, leading to a trend of adding items to their wishlists.
Meanwhile, some gamers expressed a desire for greater freedom in room decorating or for the consequences of their choices to be more clearly visible. In response, the development team has incorporated this feedback by implementing a puzzle hint system and UI improvements, demonstrating that they are working together with fans to complete the game.
‘Momento,’ which quietly reminds us of the great meaning that the small moments of life can hold, is a small yet heartfelt work crafted by three parent developers in their spare time amidst their busy daily lives. While the similar genre game ‘Unpacking’ prompted players to reflect on their lives while unpacking, ‘Momento’ captures the charm of shaping the story ahead through choices made to decorate a room. With the game set for release in the second quarter of 2026, you can experience its essence in advance through a free Steam demo.
