- The debut work of RooTwo, a 4-member team from Jungle Game Lab’s 5th cohort, a pixel-graphic cyberpunk noir
- A unique combat system that draws attention, where firing bullets reduces health and requires intercepting enemy projectiles to reload.
“UNLOAD,” a top-down boss rush action game developed by RooTwo, a four-person development team from the 5th cohort of Krafton’s talent training program “Jungle Game Lab,” will be released for free on Steam on July 31.
‘Unload’ is a game featuring a unique combat system that utilizes bullets as both a means of attack and a life force. Players take on the role of ‘Ion,’ a visitor who lost his father and right arm in an explosion and was implanted with a prosthetic arm and tactical eye, and track down the truth behind the incident alongside the AI ‘ERIS.’
Ion restores damaged records and tracks down the targets involved in the incident one by one. The pursuit, which began with a mysterious explosion at Café Vesper, passes through black market arms dealers, mercenaries, and syndicate members, gradually leading to the realization that this was not merely a simple terrorist incident.
In addition, at some point, Ion, who was acting for revenge, also becomes a new target, and the incident takes an unexpected turn.
Life decreases with every shot fired; enemy attacks are the means of reloading
The biggest feature of ‘Unload’ is its combat system that combines bullets and health into a single resource.
Each time the player pulls the trigger, one bullet is depleted from the magazine, and if the player is hit by an enemy while out of ammo, the battle ends immediately. Conversely, the fewer bullets remaining, the stronger the power of a single shot, so the player must decide at every moment whether to conserve ammo to prioritize survival or to expend all remaining bullets to unleash a powerful attack.
Projectiles fired by enemies are not simply attacks to be dodged. If you aim accurately and intercept enemy projectiles, you can eliminate the attack while simultaneously recovering ammo.
Ultimately, in a situation where ammunition is scarce, you must actively target enemy attacks. The key to combat is not merely dodging enemy bullets, but accurately intercepting them and converting them into survival resources.
Hardcore Boss Rush where you face off against five bosses in a row
The game minimizes unnecessary regular combat and is structured around a boss rush where players face off against five bosses with different combat rules and attack patterns in succession.
By defeating each boss and acquiring combat data, you can obtain new weapons and skills. You can then create your own unique combat style by combining active skill modules, which provide immediate tactical changes, with passive skill modules that alter the playstyle itself.
Separate challenge missions have also been prepared for boss battles. Completing them allows you to acquire data chips and further expand the range of skill combinations.
Cyberpunk noir expressed in pixel graphics
‘Unload’ portrays a cyberpunk world utilizing the distinctive texture of pixel graphics. A dark and gloomy noir atmosphere permeates the entire game, set against the backdrop of a futuristic city, intertwines urgent combat where survival depends on every bullet with a heavy narrative that questions what remains at the end of revenge.
The development team adopted the question, “Can all wounds be healed simply by cutting away the bad?” as the core theme of the game. The combat system of emptying the magazine and the title “Unload” are also elements that connect and express this theme.
A 4-person development team that added a unique system to a familiar genre
RooTwo is a four-person indie game development team participating in the 5th cohort of Jungle Game Lab, supported by Krafton. Their goal is to create fresh and memorable games by adding a unique mechanic to familiar genres.
‘Unload’ was also born based on this development direction. It sought to differentiate itself from existing games by combining the familiar genre of top-down boss rush action with a unique system where ‘bullets equal health’ and ‘intercepting enemy projectiles equals reloading.’
‘Unload’ will be officially released on Steam for PC on July 31. Since it is provided for free, a key feature is that you can experience the game’s core systems without the burden of a separate purchase.
