Guns, Ghosts, and Grit: ‘Dark Adelita’ Brings Mexican Folklore to Steam on May 5

    By Editorial Team2026년 04월 09일Updated:2026년 04월 10일3 Mins Read
    • The Legend: A high-stakes 2D action platformer rooted in the shadows of the Mexican Revolution.
    • The Heroine: Angela, a battle-hardened “Adelita” (female soldier) facing mythic horrors.
    • The Vibe: Retro pixel art meets brutal, one-hit-death combat—think Mega Man but with more tequila and terror.
    • The Launch: Dropping May 5, 2026 (Cinco de Mayo) on PC and Steam Deck.

The revolution may be over, but the nightmare is just beginning. Mexican indie studio Brain-dead Rabbit Games and publisher indie.io have officially set a release date for their upcoming folklore-infused shooter, Dark Adelita. Launching on the most fitting day possible—Cinco de Mayo—the game promises a punishing journey through a Mexico haunted by its own legends.

    1918: The Revolution’s Dark Aftermath

Set in the chaotic transition period of 1918, Dark Adelita tells the story of a land scarred by years of war. As the smoke clears, an ancient evil awakens, feeding on the lingering fear and grief of a broken population.

Players step into the boots of Angela, a courageous veteran of the revolutionary struggle. Armed with her reliable rifle and lightning-fast reflexes, she must traverse a landscape where the boundary between history and myth has dissolved.

    Brutal Reflexes and Mythic Bosses

Don’t let the charming pixel art fool you—this is a “white-knuckle” experience.

    • Precision Combat: Angela is often outnumbered and outgunned. The game features a high-difficulty curve where a single mistake can lead to an instant “Game Over.”
    • Authentic Settings: The levels aren’t just generic backdrops; they are modeled after real Mexican states like Yucatán, Jalisco, and Sonora, each bringing its own unique environmental hazards and atmospheric tone.
    • Folklore Bosses: Prepare for showdowns with the heavyweights of Mexican legend, including the mourning La Llorona and the sinister El Charro.

    Quick Specification: Dark Adelita

A Labor of Love from a Trio of Friends

Brain-dead Rabbit Games is a remote-first studio formed by three friends across Mexico who share a passion for showcasing their country’s rich history and culture. Following their 2024 debut Damikira, Dark Adelita represents their most ambitious attempt to blend historical context with supernatural horror.

“We wanted to create a game that wasn’t just fun, but a tribute to the beauty and strength of the Mexican people,” says lead artist Ricardo Reyes.

Whether you’re dodging deadly traps in the deserts of Sonora or fighting spirits in the jungles of Yucatán, Dark Adelita looks like it’s going to be a punishing, beautiful ride.
