Publisher indie.io and developer QH Studio have released the wave-based tactical shooter ‘Subway Invasion’ on Steam.
This title was released to coincide with the indie.io franchise sale and expands to the PC platform following the existing console versions. Set in the New York subway, the game is a wave-based tactical shooter where players defend against an alien invasion within confined spaces and with limited ammunition.
Defend the Subway Alone – A Survival Battle with Limited Resources
Set deep within the New York subway, ‘Subway Invasion’ is a game where players take on the role of a subway security officer defending a passenger-filled train from an alien invasion. Armed with only a single pistol and extremely limited ammunition, players must fend off waves of increasingly dangerous alien attackers in narrow passageways and platforms.
Ammunition is always scarce, and enemies come in waves. Since it is difficult to hold out with simple firing alone, strategic gameplay utilizing the environment is required, such as locking doors to establish defensive lines or luring enemies along specific paths.
Evolving Enemies, Tactical Survival Using the Environment
Enemy behavior patterns vary as the waves progress. Some aliens charge directly at the player, while others target key defenses around the train to distract the player and pressure them to change their strategy in real time. With each wave, they become faster, stronger, and more aggressive.
The extensive upgrade system is also a key element of the game. Points earned through survival can be invested in weapon upgrades, offering a wide range of options from gun attachments like thermal sights, flashlights, and scopes to powerful secondary weapons such as grenades.
The claustrophobic fear created by the deep underground spaces of New York
The game realistically portrays dimly lit platforms and narrow passageways, visually emphasizing the claustrophobic tension unique to the subway. The 3D first-person perspective focuses on conveying both horror and a sense of speed based on realism.
Here, the combination of hordes of aliens suddenly swarming in from the darkness, the pressure created by limited ammunition, and the claustrophobic spatial structure induces continuous tension. In particular, the sound design, which alternates between resonant environmental sounds and silence, highlights the unseen threat and completes a unique atmosphere where the underground structure itself acts as a ‘horror device.’
Solo developer’s project expands to PC following console acclaim
QH Studio, the developer of the game, is an indie studio run by a one-man team of developer Qasim Hussain. The PS5 version was already released in July 2025, and this Steam release expands distribution channels to the PC platform through a collaboration with indie.io. The game is also available for purchase on the indie.io store.
‘Subway Invasion’, listed on Metacritic, received a critic score of 88 for the PS5 version and was rated “Generally Favorable.” Overseas gaming media, including COGconnected, praised how the dense underground environment, wave-based combat, and strategic defense mechanics blended well into the fast-paced survival game.
In the Steam community, there has been a continuing positive response regarding the provision of complete content from day one and the tactical tension created by the interplay of ammunition management and spatial control.
