• Fruit Ninja Developer Luke Muscat Unveils Free Demo of Physics-Based Black Comedy Golf Game
  • An open development experiment created with 180,000 YouTube subscribers… A mobile hit developer’s transition to indie
  • $100,000 in debt, a mystery trapped in a giant golf course, a new experiment in a golf game transformed into a physics puzzle

Luke Muscat, a famous Australian game developer who created Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, has officially unveiled his next project, ‘Normal Golf Game,’ and started distributing a free demo.

This game, currently being developed by a single person, is an indie game with a unique concept that combines physics-based golf, adventure puzzles, and black comedy.

The game’s premise is extraordinary from the start. The player ends up owing $100,000 to a deranged game developer named Luke Muscat and must find a way to escape while trapped on a massive golf course.

In a nightmare triggered by golf, the player must survive by golfing again. The work is introduced as being inspired by ‘Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy’, the trick shot simulator, and ‘Jetpack Joyride’.

A vast golf course is a prison… A visual combination of physics-based manipulation and meta-humor

At first glance, the setting of a normal golf game appears to be a peaceful and beautiful golf course. While the lush green grass, sunlit scenery, and relaxed atmosphere of the course are visually realized, for the player, this is a massive trap from which there is no escape.

The game creates a unique tension as realistic environments and surreal elements gradually collide. In particular, the meta-narrative structure in which the developer himself appears as the villain is considered a key feature of the work.

The sound and atmosphere are also far from those of a simple sports game. The game is foreshadowed to feature a direction where the initially peaceful environmental sounds and the relaxed atmosphere of the golf course gradually shift toward inducing anxiety and psychological pressure as gameplay progresses.

Calculating posture, angle, and trajectory… Not a simple golf game, but a physics puzzle

This game is not simply a casual golf game where you just put the ball into the hole. Players must perform physics-based controls by directly adjusting the club’s path, direction, stance, and club face angle.

It is also characterized by the freedom to hit the ball from anywhere and utilize various objects and environmental elements. Combined with exploration elements, this structure feels closer to a physics puzzle or challenging adventure than a simple sports game.

In particular, the design where the player’s skills build through failure, repetition, and mastery—much like in ‘Getting Over It’—is expected to be a key element of fun. The goal of the game is simple: “You cannot leave this place until Luke Musket is satisfied.” However, you must find out for yourself what constitutes his satisfaction through gameplay.

The solo challenge of the developer who made ‘Fruit Ninja’… A game made with YouTube

Luke Muscat worked at Halfbrick Studios in Brisbane, Australia, where he designed ‘Fruit Ninja’ in 2010. He later developed ‘Jetpack Joyride’ and made a name for himself as a leading creator in the mobile game market. ‘Fruit Ninja’ became a global hit, selling over 20 million copies in its first year of release.

Afterwards, he took on the role of Head of Design at the operator of Snapchat, and began working as an independent developer in 2022.

The Normal Golf game is a project that originated from the idea of wanting to “take on the ultimate challenge of solo game development.” The development process is consistently being shared through Luke Muscat’s YouTube channel, and a community of approximately 189,000 subscribers is watching the production process. Beyond simple development logs, an open development approach of completing the game together with the community has become a key feature of the project.

Community reaction also drawing attention… “To think a game owes a debt to Luke Musket”

Immediately after the announcement, reactions from the Steam community and international users have been pouring in. In particular, the premise of being “trapped on a golf course while owing $100,000 to Luke Muscat” has garnered attention for its unique black comedy sensibility.

Reactions among players include comments such as, “It feels like a fusion of Getting Over It and a bizarre golf game,” “It’s definitely not a normal golf game, which makes me even more curious,” and “The premise of the developer appearing as the final boss himself is insane.” It appears to be attracting the attention of both physics-based challenge game fans and golf game users simultaneously.

A free demo of Normal Golf is currently available on PC Steam, but the official release date has not yet been announced. Indie game fans are eagerly anticipating the outcome of the developer’s most bizarre experiment to date.
