• A new dungeon scroller from Doinksoft, the developer of Gato Roboto Gunbrella
  • Chaos of old-school shooting + roguelike progression… Supports solo, local, and online co-op

Indie developer Doinksoft has partnered with Devolver Digital and confirmed the release date of their new game, ‘Dark Scrolls’, as May 28.

Released simultaneously on PC and Nintendo Switch, this title is a fantasy dungeon scroller that combines the chaos of screen-filling shooting action with the growth elements characteristic of roguelikes. It supports not only single-player but also local and online co-op play, allowing players to enjoy various ways of playing.

In front of a stationery store, arcade vibes… 90s arcades revived with old-school pixel art

The first impression of Dark Scrolls is its intense visuals. Based on bold and sharp pixel art, it offers a modern reinterpretation of the distinctive vibe of 90s arcade games. Enemies filling the screen, dazzling explosion effects, and cartoon-style character designs combine to deliver both nostalgia for the past and the thrill of modern action.

The sound also faithfully follows the direction of the visuals. Upbeat and rhythmic sound effects, along with background music that heightens tension, enhance the game’s immersion. Doinksoft’s existing It is said that the stylish sound direction showcased in Gato Roboto and Gunbrella has been carried over intact in this work.

A saxophone-playing mouse, an axe-throwing warrior… 9 unique heroes

Players set out on an adventure by choosing one of nine unique characters, ranging from classic axe-throwing warriors, magic-casting wizards, and knife-wielding rogues to cute puppies, aliens, and even a saxophone-playing mouse. Each character possesses unique attack methods and abilities, so the play style changes significantly depending on the choice.

In particular, the addition of side quests and Trinket customization elements expands the range of strategic choices. Exploration elements are also provided, allowing players to rescue new heroes and add them to their roster through hidden paths throughout the dungeons, enhancing the fun of replayability.

Ever-changing dungeons, a game structure that keeps you on the edge of your seat

The dungeons in Dark Scrolls are composed of a combination of procedurally generated and hand-designed rooms. They feature gameplay that transcends simple repetitive structures, with new branching paths, events, and powerful bosses appearing differently each time. Sharp reflexes and split-second judgment are the key to survival.

During your exploration, you can find Bruce & Goose’s Shoppe to purchase new perks, special attacks, and summoned companions with coins. The synergy created by various ability combinations maximizes the thrill of large-scale battles that fill the screen.

From Gato Roboto to Dark Scrolls… The trajectory of Devolver Digital’s Doinksoft

Doinksoft, based in Oregon, USA, was founded in 2019 and made a name for itself with Gato Roboto. Since then, it has maintained a close cooperative relationship with Devolver Digital through the 2022 physical limited edition game Demon Throttle and Gunbrella. The relationship became even more solidified in April 2023 when Devolver Digital officially acquired Doinksoft.

In their previous works, they have pursued both experimental endeavors and a high level of polish, and Dark Scrolls is an extension of this approach. Expectations are rising within the community regarding how the stylish direction and action density of their predecessors have evolved in this new title.

Dark Scrolls is expected to become a new option for gamers looking for a ‘short but intense gameplay experience’ by combining visuals that reinterpret the 90s arcade vibe in a modern way, fast-paced combat, and a roguelike structure.
