‘Slicer P’ Infiltrates Megastructure, Clears Path with Chainsaw

MotorSlice is an action-adventure game that combines parkour-based movement and combat. Players take on the role of the protagonist, ‘Slicer P,’ fighting against hostile machines set against the backdrop of massive Brutalist structures and the wastelands of a post-apocalyptic world.

P undertakes a mission to infiltrate a massive megastructure and destroy all the machinery, navigating dangerous environments using various parkour actions such as jumping, wall running, and sliding. A malfunctioning drone accompanies the journey, and the conversations and relationship between the two add depth to the game’s narrative.

Unique visuals with a claymation sensibility and overwhelming structures

The game’s visuals feature a unique style that combines old-school 3D graphics with a claymation feel. The massive Brutalist structures, rendered in Unreal Engine 5, appear in simple yet grand forms, leaving a strong impression.

Pillars and towers rising from the fog, and vast passages unfolding through the darkness, convey an overwhelming scale to the player, and the sound design and direction are also considered elements that enhance immersion.

In addition, voice actress Kira Buckland’s performance adds emotional weight to the static moments between high-speed action and makes the relationship between the protagonist and the drone more three-dimensional.

A chainsaw running along the wall climbs a giant boss.

The core of Motor Slice is a movement and combat system called ‘Motor Slicing’. It involves sticking a chainsaw into a metal surface to move along walls, and it is utilized as a core mechanic for combat beyond simple movement.

In particular, the massive boss battles that conclude each chapter feature a mechanic where players climb directly onto the boss to attack its weak points, boasting a unique combat scale not found in competitors of the same genre.

Metacritic Score of 75, Showing Presence Amid Mixed Reviews

“Motor Slice,” which launched with a Metacritic average of 75 on PS5, is receiving diverse reviews from various media outlets. While some pointed out shortcomings in the camera direction, the game generally received positive reactions for its unique worldview, art direction, and immersive atmosphere.

In particular, with reviews such as “unique visuals and stylish direction drive the player to the end” and “the world itself leaves a strong impression,” it is establishing a distinct presence as an indie action game.

The second work following ‘Togges’, by the Brazilian brother development team Regular Studio

Regular Studio is a two-person indie studio run by two Brazilian brothers, Lucas and Luiz. After debuting with the cute 3D puzzle platformer ‘Togges’, MotorSlice is their second title that has taken a completely different direction.

Despite being a small team, they elevated the technical quality by implementing large-scale megastructures and unique gameplay, and with the support of publisher Top Hat Studios, Inc., achieved a simultaneous global platform launch and entry into Game Pass.

As revealed by the development team, Motor Slice, inspired by ‘Prince of Persia’, is a game that simultaneously displays the experimental nature and individuality characteristic of indie games through a worldview that combines unique parkour action using a chainsaw with brutalist aesthetics.

Despite somewhat mixed reviews at launch, attention is focused on how this work, which sought a balance between completeness and individuality, will evolve into a game through future updates and user reactions.
