- A dark comedy strategy simulation game about managing a hellish bureaucracy
- From prisoner re-education to production line management… A new title combining simulation and management
Developer Piraknights Games and publisher Team17 Digital officially announced that the God Sim management simulation ‘Sintopia’ will be released on PC (Steam) on April 16.
Syntopia is a game featuring a unique concept of running Hell like a corporation. As a newly appointed middle manager, the player must re-educate sinners and design punishment systems, while also intervening in the Overworld civilization to regulate the flow of souls. The game stands out for pursuing a distinctive kind of fun by combining strategic management elements with a worldview that blends humor and satire.
Even hell is a company in the end… Reform the sinners and meet the quotas.
The player’s role is simple: to ‘re-educate’ the sinners cast into hell and decide what fate awaits them. You must classify souls, assign appropriate punishments, and efficiently manage hell’s production line.
In particular, designing punishment facilities, managing employees, and meeting quotas are key. However, hell management is by no means simple. If sins accumulate excessively, chaos ensues, and if this is not properly controlled, an even greater crisis follows.
The Overworld and the Underworld… an asymmetric structure running simultaneously
The core of the game is an ‘asymmetric loop’ structure where the Overworld and the Underworld progress simultaneously. In the Overworld, a chickpea-shaped civilization called ‘Humus’ lives, sustaining its own life and accumulating sins.
Players can intervene in their lives using various spells. A total of 10 abilities are provided, including ‘Force Push’ which creates a powerful shockwave, ‘Healing Rain’ which aids in recovery, and ‘Extinction Event’ which causes destructive consequences; depending on the choices made, the quantity and quality of souls flowing into hell will vary.
Once a soul descends into the Underground, the management of Hell begins in earnest. The key to generating profit lies in routing paths to punishment facilities suited to the type of sin, managing employees, and meeting quotas. As the two worlds are closely interconnected, balanced operation is paramount.
Seven Deadly Sins Boss Battles, Hell Management Enjoyed in Two Modes
The content structure is also solid. The campaign mode, which supports full voice acting in English and French, offers four difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Masochist. Additionally, the Sandbox mode, which allows for free adjustment of settings, supports a wide range of playstyles, from challenging gameplay to leisurely management.
In the latter part of the game, the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ appear as entities with distinct forms and abilities, threatening the player’s management of Hell. These entities possess behavioral patterns and effects that reflect the characteristics of the sins, such as Greed, Wrath, and Sloth, requiring completely different strategies depending on the situation.
For example, certain sins create variables that shake the very system of Hell, such as paralyzing production lines or distorting the flow of souls to reduce processing efficiency. Players must minimize these effects by adjusting facility layouts, personnel management, and punishment methods, and at times, intervene directly to manage crises.
As such, the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ go beyond simple boss battle elements and serve as a key mechanism that adds tension to the management simulation.
Piraknights Games, created by five industry veterans
Piraknights Games, an independent developer based in Aix-les-Bains, Savoie, France, is a studio founded in 2022 by five game industry professionals.
The team possesses a robust structure capable of handling all aspects of game production in-house, including artists, game designers, programmers, and producers. True to its name, the team operates with a philosophy of creating games by taking on challenges freely like “Pirates” and upholding beliefs and virtues like “Knights,” while valuing passion, respect, sharing, and consideration as its core values.
Syntopia is characterized by its active use of humor and satire instead of excessive darkness, despite dealing with the subject of hell. The visuals and setting, infused with the sensibilities of 1980s pop culture, present a somewhat heavy theme in a lighter manner while simultaneously offering the freedom characteristic of a “god game” and the depth of a management simulation.
Overseas media outlets that have reviewed the preview build have positively evaluated the highly polished system and intuitive UI, citing it as one of the strategy and simulation games to watch this year.
A combination of black comedy set in hell and intricate management simulation. Syntopia is garnering anticipation as a game that allows players to enjoy both strategy and humor by adding a unique setting to a familiar genre.
