The arcade adventure game ‘The Coin Game’, developed by American solo developer Kevin Westendorf (devtoid) and published by Kwalee, was officially released as version 1.0 on March 19.
The game was officially released approximately seven years after starting Early Access in 2019. On Steam, it maintains an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating with 95% of over 5,600 reviews being positive, and with this 1.0 release, it has expanded its platform by introducing PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for the first time.
From arcade machines to go-karts and mini-golf… the entire island is a playground.
The Coin game is set on a sandbox island filled with various arcade machines and activities. Gamers can freely roam the island and experience a wide range of entertainment, including arcade games, go-karting, mini-golf, and RC boat racing.
You can enjoy the animatronic character Teddy and Jam at Larry’s Arcade, or the space-themed games at UFO Arcade. The 90s-style indoor shopping mall features arcades, food courts, shops, and even a theater where you can watch movies live. With over 20 games including a water park, mini-golf, RC boat racing, and a mobile carnival, the entire island is a giant playground.
Survival vs. Freedom… Two contrasting play modes
The Coin Game is a game that combines a life simulator and an arcade simulator, featuring two play styles: Survivor Mode and Birthday Mode.
In Survivor Mode, you start with limited funds and must survive by managing your health and energy with a wristwatch. If you run out of money, you must raise funds through various methods, such as rummaging through trash cans, working part-time delivering newspapers, or selling items at a pawn shop. On the other hand, Birthday Mode is a free-experience focused mode where Uncle Phil provides unlimited cash, allowing you to enjoy the arcade to your heart’s content without any worries.
Unity Engine Completely Rebuilt… “5 Months Expected to Turn into a Year”
Developer Kevin Westendorf spent the past year completely rebuilding the game for the latest Unity engine. Although initially expected to take 5 to 6 months, the work period was extended during the process of redesigning the scene loading system and internal structure, and the translation work alone took 6 months.
In particular, the code for numerous devices placed in indoor spaces had to be completely rewritten, and the translation work also took a considerable amount of time. Version 1.0 added various content, including new areas, vehicles, side quests, puzzles, and an ending exclusive to Survivor Mode.
Mixed reactions amidst ‘overwhelming positivity’… Physics engine controversy
Immediately after its release, community reactions have been mixed. It has achieved an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating with 95% positive reviews out of 5,647 cumulative Steam reviews, and recorded a peak of 339 concurrent users on March 19, the day of its launch.
However, some gamers focused heavily on physics engine issues immediately after the release of version 1.0. Criticism was raised that features that worked normally in Early Access had become unstable, such as coins overlapping due to physics not functioning properly in most ticket games like Coin Pusher.
On the other hand, the media and some users also voiced high praise for the game’s nostalgic sentiment, calling it “a work that revives the nostalgia of the golden age of arcades.”
A solo developer who devoted 7 years to a single project
Developer Kevin Westendorf is an indie developer who has been developing ‘The Coin Game’ virtually alone, and has continuously expanded and improved the game over the course of about seven years since its early access release in 2019.
Based on arcade culture and the sensibilities of the 90s, he has focused on creating an ‘experiential sandbox’ rather than a simple collection of mini-games. He has put a great deal of effort into meticulously reproducing the operation and physics effects of actual arcade machines, and a key feature is the continuous addition of content based on user feedback.
In particular, for this 1.0 version, he personally carried out the large-scale task of a complete rebuild tailored to the latest engine, thereby elevating the project’s quality. His development approach of evolving a single work over a long period is regarded as an example of the tenacious pursuit of perfection characteristic of indie games.
The Coin Game is also available on Steam as part of the ‘Ultimate Arcade Bundle’ with Arcade Paradise, offering an additional 15% discount upon purchase. Bug fix patches have been released promptly since the official launch, and the developers have revealed plans to add multiplayer features.
