Gold ropes and talismans, reinterpreting Korean sentiments through games

“National Exorcist Association” is set in a secret society of psychics who protect humanity from demons that threaten the peace of humanity. It features traditional designs like gold chains, talismans, and martial arts uniforms, combined with the surreal elements of exorcisms set in a Korean high school.

The gamer takes on the role of Hye-seong, a young girl who, thanks to the influence of her shaman mother, has gained the ability to see ghosts. Hye-seong discovers that her mother’s death is connected to the evil exorcist organization “Jo-wol-hoe,” and embarks on a journey with the National Exorcist Association to uncover the truth.

A story about solving a problem through ‘exorcism’ instead of physical exorcism.

The game’s most unique feature is its exorcism mechanic. Instead of the physical exorcisms typical of occult games, it adopts a narrative-driven approach, similar to gut (good deeds) or hanpuri (good deeds). Players must roam the field, uncovering objects related to the ghost’s grudge.

The game unfolds between the real world, where everyday life unfolds, and a barrier created by a vengeful demon. These two worlds, while similar and yet distinct, are intimately connected.

From Webtoon to Game, a Four-Year Journey

“National Exorcist Association” began as a webtoon and is now poised for a rebirth as a game. Artists Kim Na-hyun and Jeong Seo-yeon, who were in charge of the art, first released “National Exorcist Association” on Naver Webtoon in 2020. The team, who had previously suspended the webtoon due to difficulties with weekly serialization, formed a new team and embarked on game development with the help of the Gwangju Global Game Center’s Indie Stars support project.

The game’s development process wasn’t smooth. Since most of the team members work for game companies, communication was limited to online development. Furthermore, the lack of cohesion in the art department also emerged as a challenge. To address this, we’re establishing a system, including appointing an art director and establishing clear milestones.

Currently, the demo version of “National Exorcist Association” is available on Steam and Stove Indie platforms. As previously mentioned, it will be released in Early Access on Steam and Stove on December 19th. All eyes are on how this game, which reinterprets Korean sentiments and shamanistic culture with a modern sensibility, will be received upon its official release.
