The next government should focus on ‘promotion’ rather than ‘regulation’ of games
Indie game production support fund emphasizes the need for the Game Industry Promotion Agency
Government policy guidelines for P2E, NFT, and metaverse
Korea Mobile Game Association Chairman Hwang Seong-ik proposed to the next government the establishment of the Game Industry Promotion Agency and the creation of an indie game production support fund as a plan for the future development of the K-game industry.
At the ‘2022 K-Game Future Forum’, hosted by JoongAng Ilbo S and held at the e-Sports Hall of Fame in Sangam-dong, Seoul on the 20th, the president of the Association, Seong-ik Hwang, said that the game-related promises of the current presidential candidates are only regulation and no promotion. It emphasized the need for support policies at the government level.
Chairman Hwang said, “The current domestic game market is very polarized between large companies and SMEs, and there are many difficulties in human resource procurement, competency, and capital. There are even talk of losing,” he appealed to the practical difficulties of the industry.
As an alternative to this, Chairman Hwang mentioned the film industry’s support for the production of indie films. “I would like to create a fund such as an indie game production support project where an indie game developer consisting of one or two people can independently create new trials, various ideas, and creative businesses. The indie film production support business is a good model to form the basis of the film industry, so it needs to be sufficiently benchmarked.”
In addition, Chairman Hwang said about the government’s policy of unilateral change in regulations, “The government tends to drive game companies into a speculation whenever new attempts are made.” It becomes a problem if it is turned into NFT cash. 15 years ago, we were caught up in the stereotype of ‘the story of the sea’ and couldn’t even take a step forward.”
As an alternative to this, Chairman Hwang said, “The government needs to give new guidelines for P2E, NFT, and metaverse. A new guideline is needed on how small and medium-sized game companies develop, to what extent, and to what extent development is required. In the long term, I think it will be necessary to separate speculative and gambling through a revision of the law.”
As for what small and medium-sized game developers want from the next government, they cited the elimination of reverse discrimination. Chairman Hwang said, “The global market is highly competitive and can only be entered if localization, capital, and marketing are concentrated. I hope it doesn’t happen. I hope that the Game Industry Promotion Agency will be established so that the game industry can have a voice and focus on business.”
