- Developed by London-based Whetstone Games, scheduled for Steam Early Access in the second half of 2026.
- Extracting music created with the in-game sequencer into WAV files and connecting it to actual album release
OFFBEAT, a music tycoon game developed by UK developer Whetstone Games and published by Pantaloon Interactive, recently released a demo version via Itch.io. A Steam version is also scheduled to be released soon, and development is underway with the goal of an official launch in the second half of 2026 following an early access period of approximately 6 to 8 months.
Offbeat garnered attention by officially releasing its first single, ‘Not Your Uncle’s Ringtone,’ which was produced directly within the game by Creative Director Ed Sibley, immediately upon its launch. It is being noted as an exceptional case where a game functions as an actual music production tool and music distribution platform, going beyond simple entertainment content.
A peculiar music studio where garden ornaments become synthesizers
Offbeat is a music production simulation game created in a pixel art style. Instead of handling professional studios and expensive equipment like typical music production games, unexpected objects such as garden decorations, kitchen appliances, office supplies, and toys take on the role of synthesizers.
Players connect these tools to sequencers and effect equipment to create unique electronic music. Another fun element of the game is that you cannot know what kind of sound the garden gnome will produce until you connect it yourself.
The game is organized into themed chapters based on electronic music genres, and players can grow their own studio by purchasing new equipment through the ‘Riches & Rags’ catalog and entrusting upgrades and modifications to the unique technician, ‘Electric Lacey’. Various clients and eccentric characters appear, adding a narrative to the music production process.
“The game is a DAW”… Created music is extracted as an actual WAV file
The biggest feature of the game is that you can extract music created within the game as actual audio files.
Songs completed by the player using the in-game sequencer are saved to the computer in WAV format. While it does not offer the complex features of a professional Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), it is equipped with sufficient functionality to experience composition, arrangement, and sound design, as well as to check the results.
The development team aims to lower the high barrier to entry for music production. By presenting the potentially expensive and complex process of music creation in the familiar format of a game, the game is designed to allow players to naturally learn the basics of synthesizers, sound design, composition, and recording.
The development team stated their production intent, saying, “The goal is not to make good music, but to express and experiment freely.”
In-game creations lead to actual music releases … In-game singles released as real albums
What makes Offbeat even more special is that the music created within the game is connected to the actual music market.
Ed Sibley stated at the time of the announcement, “I needed music for the trailer, and since it is a music production game, I wanted to create a song directly within the game,” adding, “I ran Offbeat and worked by connecting various equipment, and I liked the result so I ended up releasing it as a single.”
Publisher Pantaloon established a separate record label, Pantaloon Records, for this purpose. They plan to support the future release of music created by players within the game on actual music platforms. This is being regarded as a new attempt to connect the gaming, music production software, and record industries.
“Lowering the entry barrier to music production”… Attracting attention from overseas gaming media
Overseas game media are evaluating Offbeat as more than just a simple tycoon game.
It is garnering attention for its unique structure that combines music production simulation, educational elements, and actual audio production features, allowing players to learn music production while having fun. In particular, the ability to release music created within the game as an actual album is a novel approach rarely seen in existing music games.
Whetstone Games plans to improve the system by actively incorporating player feedback during the Early Access period.
An era where music created within games extends to real-world streaming platforms. OFFBEAT appears poised to become one of the most unique experiments blurring the boundaries between games and music creation.
