- Set in the lunar South Pole colony ‘New Arcadia’… A sci-fi adventure focusing on documentation and exploration instead of combat
- 1/6 Hard Sci-Fi World Featuring Real-Time Gravity and Lunar Dust Toxicity… First PC Playtest Begins Simultaneously
The South Pole of the Moon in 2119. Humanity’s last lunar colony, ‘New Arcadia,’ is on the verge of collapse in just three hours. The colony has been thrown into chaos by an attack from the extremist group ‘MudBoots,’ who advocate for a return to Earth, and instead of fighting with guns, the player must choose what to save and what to give up.
A new story and gameplay trailer for ‘Lunar Strike,’ a hard sci-fi narrative adventure currently under development by the Belgian Zaventem-based indie studio Cognition Europe, was unveiled at the Insider Gaming Showcase on May 28. Along with this, the first PC playtest has also begun, and the game is being developed with a target release date of Summer 2026 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
From gravity to the toxicity of lunar dust… Beautiful and cold hard sci-fi visuals
Lunar Strike is a game featuring a hard sci-fi world based on real science. The game implements a 1/6 gravity environment of the moon, realistic propulsion and movement physics, the operation of lunar landers and rovers, and even the toxic effects of lunar dust.
‘New Arcadia,’ the colony in the permanent shadow region of the lunar South Pole that serves as the setting for the game, conveys the atmosphere of harsh space survival through an environment of extreme contrast between light and darkness, narrow and claustrophobic metal corridors, and the vast lunar horizon stretching beyond helmets.
In particular, this trailer features a performance of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ reinterpreted by actor Abbe Tanenbaum, adding emotional depth to the game. The design, which unfolds the story centering on exploration, scanning, and environmental storytelling rather than combat, also establishes the game’s unique identity.
A sci-fi survival narrative completed through exploration, documentation, and ethical choices
The core of the game is not ‘combat’ but the preservation of cultural heritage. Players take on the role of ‘Bo,’ a tech-enhanced archivist, and must record and preserve the last traces of human civilization on a moon colony on the brink of collapse.
By utilizing 3D scanning, photogrammetry, and record analysis systems to preserve artifacts and track clues to events, the choices regarding which objects and memories to preserve have a direct impact on the future of the colony and the interpretation of history.
As such, Luna Strike breaks away from the traditional action-centric space game formula, bringing hard sci-fi survival depictions, ethical choices, and themes of record-keeping and preservation to the forefront. Players must make constant decisions to protect humanity’s collective memory within a limited time.
The Future Vision of the Moon in 2119 Created by Actual Research and Creative Philosophy
Brian Pope, who leads the development of the game, is a writer, director, and entrepreneur, and the founder of the Arc/k Project, a non-profit foundation aimed at the digital preservation of humanity’s cultural heritage.
He explained, “Lunar Strike is a game inspired by the concept of heritage protection.” The development team collaborated with space science researchers, cultural heritage experts, sound designers, and advisors, and designed a vision of the future in 2119 by referencing the lunar colonization roadmaps of international space agencies, including the ESA.
An interesting point is that the game’s release coincides with NASA’s Artemis II mission. As a project for a manned lunar orbital flight—the first in over 50 years—is underway in reality, ‘Lunar Strike’ presents another possibility for the lunar era through scientific imagination and a unique perspective on cultural heritage preservation.
