• End of 1.5 Years of Early Access… Complete Edition of Zombie Survival RPG Combining Deckbuilding and Caravan Management Unveiled
  • Combining open-world exploration, card combat, and survival management… Emphasizing the sensibilities of ‘Wartales’-style strategy RPGs
  • Combining deck-building with a zombie apocalypse open world… An experimental genre hybrid making a bold move with the official 1.0 release.

The Dead Await, a zombie apocalypse survival RPG developed by Tbilisi-based indie developer Shotx Studio and published by indie.io, released its official 1.0 version on Steam and the indie.io store on the 18th, following approximately 18 months of Early Access. The launch price is $12.99, with a 35% discount available for a limited time.

The Dead Await is an open-world survival RPG that combines deck-building combat and caravan management elements. At first glance, it may appear to be an experimental title that mixes various genres, but in actual gameplay, the survival management, card combat, and exploration systems interlock organically to establish a unique genre identity.

The darkness of ruined cities and underground facilities… the weight of a post-apocalyptic world

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a zombie apocalypse. Players must lead a group of survivors while exploring desolate cities, underground bunkers, nascent settlements, and hostile territories.

In version 1.0, Act 3, the final content, was added. New areas such as the dangerous street ‘Hope’, the unknown space ‘Hell-0’, and ‘Zone 99’ were revealed, completing the scale of the game’s world.

The survival system is a core element that drives the game. Food shortages, injuries, mental health issues, and the permanent loss of comrades affect long-term operations beyond simple combat outcomes. Since a single misstep can plunge the entire caravan into crisis, continuous resource management and prudent judgment are required.

An open-world deck-building RPG closer to ‘Wartales’ than ‘Slay the Spire’

The biggest feature of The Dead Await is that it incorporates a deck-building system into an open-world RPG structure.

While typical card-based games focus on roguelike-style replay, this title utilizes an open-world RPG framework based on expansive field exploration, party management, and a long-term growth structure. For this reason, it is considered to have an atmosphere and gameplay feel closer to strategy RPGs like ‘Wartales’ or ‘Battle Brothers’ than to ‘Slay the Spire’.

Players can develop survivors using the attribute, skill, and perk systems, and build their own combat builds by combining cards and equipment acquired during the journey. The core fun of the game lies in the moments when weapon combinations and synergy design prove effective in critical situations.

Arena Mode, Z Shop, Vault Safe, Permanent Reward System … Massive Expansion of 1.0 Content

The 1.0 update introduced Act 3 content and a large-scale new system that rewards long-term survival.

Key features introduced include character skins, Z-Tasks-based permanent rewards, the Z-Shop, and ‘Vault Safe,’ an account-wide sharing system. Additionally, in the new Arena mode, players can challenge themselves to acquire rare rewards by enduring increasingly deadly battles.

Along with this, the level cap is raised, and new weapon modes, equipment, and expanded growth paths are also provided.

A masterpiece from Georgia Indie Studio perfected by community feedback, Steam reviews are divided.

Overseas gaming media are paying attention to The Dead Await’s attempt at genre fusion.

COGconnected described it as “a game that combines open exploration, caravan operation, and strategic deck building,” while GameDaily introduced it as “a game that shows a unique combination beyond mere marketing slogans.”

Turn Based Lovers described it as “a game suitable for players who want a deck builder that emphasizes real survival pressure and long-term risk management.”

Currently, the Steam user rating is ‘Mixed,’ with 68% positive reviews based on 101 reviews. While some users point out the initial barrier to entry and the lack of system explanation, expectations for improved polish after the official release remain, as steady improvements have been made during the Early Access period.
