• 2D Pixel Side-Scrolling Action Platformer from Korean Indie Developer Scheduled for Simultaneous Release on Steam and STOVE
  • A devastated continent, corrupt power, a loyal mechanical butler… Hardboiled narrative combined with modular build combat
  • Influx from Taiwanese and overseas communities confirmed following Steam Next Fest demo release, gaining attention through streamer broadcasts

In a world where steam engines have become excessively advanced, the continent is devastated by successive climate disasters, and the central government sinks into a swamp of corruption. Amidst a vortex of people thinking only of their own interests, only a single being heads to the battlefield holding a staff.

‘Module Berserk’, a 2D pixel action platformer where you become a butler-type automaton more loyal than anyone else to protect the young lady and track down the truth behind the incident surrounding her family MODULE:BERSER K) is set to launch on Steam and STOVE.

The game progresses by completing various quests, collecting resources to develop the hideout, gathering companions, and equipping desired modules on each body part to complete your own combat build.

This game, currently under development by the Korean indie developer Studio Brakio, is making its presence known by attracting attention from domestic and international communities following the release of its Steam Next Fest demo.

The darkness of a desolate steam city… A hard-boiled steampunk world realized through pixel art

Module Berserk is a 2D pixel action game set in a steampunk world where the social system is collapsing due to runaway steam technology and recurring climate disasters. Instead of a glamorous Victorian fantasy, the steampunk world in which the game takes place prominently portrays a dark and dense worldview where corruption and decay are in progress.

The sophisticated 2D pixel art vividly portrays the textures of a metallic city, streets entangled with steam pipes, and the silhouettes of mechanical butlers traversing the gaps. A hard-boiled sensibility permeates the entire work. A dry tension reminiscent of detective noir, a solitary protagonist who refuses to bow to power, and the atmosphere of an ensemble drama intertwined with betrayal and conspiracy blend seamlessly onto the retro-style pixel graphics.

At the center of the story stands a butler-type automaton drawn into battle by a mysterious heartbeat amidst a corrupt system and greedy figures. As a loyal butler and warrior, the player must track down the mastermind behind the events.

From cane-wielding butler to battle machine… Module combinations determine combat style

The core system of Module Berserk is the ‘Module’ system, which is also reflected in the title. Players can replace the modules equipped on the protagonist at the ‘Maintenance Station’ within the hideout, and engage in combat by selecting the desired modules for each body part to complete their own unique build.

The combat style changes completely depending on which modules are equipped on which parts, and the fun of experimenting with various combinations enhances the strategic depth and expandability of the side-scrolling action. This means that the core fun lies not just in collecting powerful equipment, but in customizing to fit your play style.

The game is structured so that players earn resources by completing various quests to develop their hideout and gather companions one by one; it is not just a simple combat game but incorporates elements of gradual growth and world exploration. Additionally, the element of “importance of choice” is added, allowing the player’s decisions to influence the narrative progression and the direction of events.

Gaining international attention after Next Fest demo release… Over 2,000 downloads in Taiwan

Module Berserk experienced an unexpected influx of international players through a demo released prior to the start of Steam Next Fest. As YouTube streamers introduced it as a newly released demo game, it generated over 2,000 downloads in Taiwan alone.

The development team analyzed that Chinese language support was one of the key factors. Given that the Steam Next Fest page is structured to automatically display games based on the user’s language environment, it appears that multilingual support influenced the influx of overseas users and increased the likelihood of discovery.

Currently, tags such as steampunk, hardboiled, 2D pixel graphics, side-scrolling platformer, atmospheric, and importance of choice are registered on the Steam page, and the game is also expanding its reach to domestic users through a simultaneous release on STOVE.

A work nurtured in the Indie Game Development Gallery… Growing with the community

Module Berserk is also a title that has grown by sharing its development process based on the indie game development community. The development team has consistently shared reviews of the demo release, experiences participating in Steam Next Fest, language support strategies, and inflow data analysis, and among domestic indie developers It is attracting attention.

‘Module Berserk’ is also drawing attention as a work that demonstrates a realistic overseas expansion strategy for the Korean indie game scene, in that it is an example of a small development team actively utilizing multilingual support and community communication to target global platforms.
