• Developed by BAFTA Triple Crown Winner Poncle… Word of mouth for the most anticipated game of the first half of 2026
  • Combining turn-based × ultra-fast combatKingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura in charge of the main theme

Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard from Vampire Survivors, a spin-off game co-developed by Poncle (developer of Vampire Survivors) and Nosebleed Interactive (developer of Arcade Paradise), was released simultaneously on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on April 21.

The game is the first spin-off title of the ‘Vampire Survivors’ series, which sparked a ‘Vampire-like’ craze in 2021, recording over 7.8 million cumulative sales and estimated revenue of approximately 70 billion won on Steam alone. The previous title was recognized for its artistic merit, winning the Best Game award at the 2023 BAFTA (British Academy Awards), beating out formidable AAA titles.

In particular, this title has been attracting attention as the most anticipated indie game of the first half of 2026 even before its release, thanks to its reinterpretation of traditional real-time action into a turn-based deck-building dungeon RPG. Its reasonable price and addictive replayability are also reasons why fans around the world are paying attention.

The DNA of Vampire Survivors, reborn as a turn-based deck-building game

The developer explains that the game has recreated the snowballing combat thrill of Vampire Survivor into a high-speed turn-based, card-based BLOBBER (first-person dungeon crawler). This means it combines deck-building and roguelite elements with the ‘BLOBBER’ style of exploring grid-like dungeons from a first-person perspective.

The core mechanism is the proprietary Turboturn system. Cards are used sequentially starting with the lowest mana, and as the combo continues, the effect of the next card increases exponentially. The key strategy is to build stacks with wild cards to aim for chain combos that continue for 10, 20, 30, or more stages.

The core of the accessibility emphasized by the developer is that whether you play strategically and slowly or rush through turns as quickly as possible, the outcome is always clearly calculated.

Deckbuilding, Crawling, and the World of Vampire Survivor

In the game, you accumulate experience points and level up to acquire new cards, and breaking chests yields gems for customization and power-ups. By triggering chain effects through weapon evolution, you can perform combos that transcend the game’s limits.

The multi-layered dungeon features a realistic structure, and the mechanic of finding a shovel to descend to the next floor adds a spatial enjoyment entirely different from Vampire Survivors. Since deck compositions vary for each different crawler (character), the fun of repeated gameplay is also a core element of the game.

The developer stated regarding this title, “It is the first spin-off of Vampire Survivors, and our goal is to apply the core pillars of VS development—accessibility, immediacy, reasonable pricing, replayability, fun, and spectacular visuals—to the existing genre.” They also expressed a positive stance regarding post-launch updates.

Soundtrack featuring Yoko Shimomura, a master of Japanese game music

The game’s main theme, ‘Il Cuor non si Spaura,’ was composed by Yoko Shimomura, a Japanese game music maestro well known for Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario RPG, Street Fighter II, Final Fight, and Legend of Mana, which is also becoming a topic of conversation.

The visuals inherit the bright and cheerful pixel art style characteristic of the previous game, Vampire Survivor, while adding a dark and mysterious atmosphere befitting the dungeon crawler genre. Familiar characters and weapons appear in new ways within the context of first-person dungeon exploration, offering fans a welcome reunion.

Designated as the ‘Most Anticipated Title of 2026’ in the indie game scene even before release

Even before its release, Vampire Crawlers has been considered one of the “most anticipated titles of the first half of 2026” in the indie gaming world. The biggest reason for this is that it is the first official spin-off of Vampire Survivor. Fans held high trust and expectations, as it is an expanded universe presented directly by Poncle, the creators who spearheaded the “Vampire-like” craze.

Furthermore, the structure combining the contrasting elements of ‘turn-based’ and ‘ultra-fast progression’ also garnered significant attention. In particular, the ‘Turboturn’ system sparked curiosity from the moment of its reveal, receiving praise that it “could change the paradigm of turn-based games.”

On top of this, expectations continued regarding the high addictiveness, low barrier to entry, and excellent value for money demonstrated by the previous title. The ability to collect and grow familiar characters and items in a new way was enough to attract the attention of the existing fanbase.

The collaboration between Poncle and Nosebleed Interactive was also a factor that heightened expectations. There was great anticipation for the synergy between the two developers, who have garnered attention for their unique direction, and this interest was actually proven by ranking at the top of the indie game charts on Steam Wishlist.

Amidst high expectations, media reactions are mixed.

Reactions from overseas media are somewhat mixed. Some praised it, noting that the combination of deck-building and the existing system was “impressive,” while others pointed out the repetitiveness in the later stages and the grinding elements as shortcomings. Overall, it is being evaluated as an interesting endeavor for both Vampire Survivor fans and fans of the deck-building genre.

Vampire Crawlers was released at a relatively reasonable price of $9.99 and plans to continue its existing development philosophy, including demo-based development and continuous updates.
