- An indie dungeon crawler by a veteran husband-and-wife development team from Piranha Bites
- Underground labyrinth exploration realized with Unreal Engine 5, a highly anticipated title inheriting classic sensibilities
Pithead Studio, an indie studio founded by Jenny and Björn Pankratz, a former developer couple famous for the Gothic series Piranha Bytes, officially released their debut game ‘Cralon’ on Steam and Epic Games on April 17, 2026.
Cralon is a 3D immersive sim dungeon crawler game in which a warrior named Cralon, trapped in the abyss of a dark mine, fights to escape to the surface. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game maximizes immersion with its overwhelming graphics and detailed environmental interactions. It is praised for bringing out the flavor of an authentic RPG by going beyond simply defeating enemies to include crafting, upgrading, and a deep, fully voiced dialogue system.
In particular, the unique heavy atmosphere showcased by past Gothic series and the organically connected massive dungeon design are drawing attention as content that will satisfy both old gamers and new users.
Chasing a demon, trapped in an underground labyrinth… The story of ‘Cralon’
The player takes on the role of the hero ‘Cralon the Brave’ and tracks down a demon that is stealing from the residents and treasures of a nearby village. However, during the pursuit, he is ambushed by the demon and falls deep into an old mine shaft.
Trapped in the darkness, Kralon must find an escape route by navigating through a complex network of underground passages. As he descends deeper into the underground world, an ominous sense that something is wrong grows stronger, and he begins to cooperate with the creatures of the mine to uncover the secrets hidden within.
An underground world of light and darkness crafted with Unreal Engine 5
Tom’s Gaming Vault, an international media outlet that played the demo, highly praised the atmosphere and expressiveness of the exploration, noting that the lighting effects were particularly impressive. The implementation of ‘Body Awareness,’ which allows the player character’s legs and body to be seen realistically from a first-person perspective, was also one of the elements well-received for enhancing immersion.
Inspired by Arx Fatalis and Ultima Underworld, the vast underground world is crafted with a seamless level structure to maximize immersion in exploration. Diverse environments such as excavated mines, caves, and underground ruins blend together, while secrets and traps hidden throughout the darkness stimulate the desire to explore. Responsive AI and full-voice dialogue from NPCs also breathe life into the dark dungeons of the underground world.
The intersection of immersive sims, role-playing, and dungeon crawlers
Cralon is not a dungeon crawler with a simple, repetitive combat structure. It is designed to combine the free exploration and environmental interaction characteristic of immersive sims, the growth system of role-playing games, and the tension of a dungeon crawler.
It supports both close-range and long-range combat, and features elements for item crafting, character upgrades, and collecting worldbuilding clues through documents and drawings. The structure, where creatures can become either enemies or allies, also heightens the unpredictability of exploration.
However, initial reactions are mixed. During the demo phase, some reviewers pointed out that the combat controls felt somewhat clunky and that further polishing was needed before the official release. Following the official launch, Steam user reviews show a “mixed” rating, with 58% of the 31 reviews being positive.
At the time of its announcement, PC Gamer expressed anticipation, describing it as “a title reminiscent of Arx Fatalis.” Interest from fans of classic dungeon crawlers also continued in specialized RPG media and communities. In particular, the modern reinterpretation of the classic atmosphere garnered attention.
The Indie Game Challenge of a Veteran Couple with 25 Years of Experience
Pithead Studio was established in July 2024, and its name embodies both an affection for the industrial culture of the Ruhr region in Germany and the meaning of “light at the end of the tunnel.” Björn Pankratz, former Creative Director at Piranha Weitz, stated that he founded the new studio “to continue doing what we love” after leaving the studio with Jenny Pankratz.
The two founders stated that they aim for smaller titles featuring dense writing, environmental fidelity, and a focused gameplay loop, free from the constraints of large IPs. The PC version of the game will be published directly by Pithead Studio, while the console version is planned to expand to PlayStation and Xbox through a partnership with Artex Software.
