• Korean One-Person Developer Icepil Studio’s Strategic Roguelike RPG Released Simultaneously on iOS and Android
  • 91% of 197 Steam reviews rated ‘Very Positive,’ and the mobile version offers the same content as the PC version.
  • GamingOnPhone “A title distinguished by careful, strategy-driven combat,” supports both Dungeon and Quest modes

A strategic RPG that combines the tactical depth of classic SRPGs with the replay structure characteristic of roguelikes has arrived on mobile. Crawl Tactics, a turn-based tactical roguelike inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics, was officially released on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store on May 13.

Developed by the Korean one-person indie studio Icefield Studio, this title was first released on PC Steam in 2022 and is characterized by a combination of classic SRPG combat and roguelike progression. The mobile version basically offers the same content as the PC version, but mod support and some skirmish content are limited.

‘Living Battlefield’ realized through isometric pixel art

The visuals of Crawl Tactics are implemented in an isometric 2D pixel art style. With the Version 2 update, the rough initial graphics have been significantly improved, making background tiles, lighting, shadows, and water effects much more refined.

The immersion in combat has also increased as the impact of attacks and hit effects have been enhanced. Scenes where elevation differences and terrain determine the course of the battle on an isometric grid are rendered with precision amidst the sharpness characteristic of pixel art.

In terms of sound and atmosphere, the tension of dark fantasy dungeon exploration orchestrates the rhythm between combat and exploration. Setting grass on fire causes it to spread, striking enemies on water with lightning inflicts area-of-effect damage, and sparks hitting poison clouds cause them to explode. Such chain reactions on a battlefield where the laws of physics come alive visually and audibly maximize the dynamism of combat.

Final Fantasy Tactics × FTL… A feel of ‘traditional strategy’ rather than a puzzle

Crawl Tactics is not a puzzle-style tactical game where you find a single correct answer, but a turn-based strategy RPG that emphasizes the strategic depth of traditional SRPGs. Various factors such as terrain elevation, unit direction, weather, and terrain influence the outcome of battles.

Each battle offers a strategy-driven experience that requires careful planning centered on terrain, enemy positioning, and skill synergies. In combat, utilizing the environment is crucial, such as luring enemies into traps using physical interactions like pushing and throwing, or attacking by rolling rocks.

Long-range attacks using devices such as cannons and crossbows are possible, and various traps trigger in succession to act as variables that turn the tide of battle. The design requires a “strategy of reading the board” rather than simple skill exchanges.

Dungeon Mode + Quest Mode, 300+ Skills, 40 Classes, 200 Weapons

The scale of the content is also noteworthy. You can freely customize your party with over 300 skills, 40 classes, and 200 types of weapons. The game is broadly divided into Dungeon Mode and Quest Mode. Dungeon Mode provides a new battlefield every time using a procedural generation method, while in Quest Mode, you must build a village and train mercenaries to defend against invasions by increasingly powerful enemies.

The end-game content is also substantial. After clearing the main dungeon, you can reset and grow your character through New Game Plus and the ‘Reverse’ function, and additional difficulty levels are unlocked sequentially upon clearing the Torment difficulty.

Steam 91% ‘Very Positive’… Praised for strategy and polish

The PC version has been well-received, recording a ‘Very Positive’ rating of 91% from users on Steam. Overseas media outlets have cited the unique structure combining roguelike and tactical RPG elements, along with the ever-changing combat experience, as its main strengths. In particular, the design, which focuses on terrain, placement, and skill synergy rather than auto-battle or simple repetition, is highly praised by strategy game fans.

Regarding the release of the mobile version, the developer stated, “Although many players prefer PC, we decided to release a mobile version to meet the demands of players who have been looking forward to a mobile version, just like the previous title, SFD.”

Developed alone since 2018… “Making fun games from the start”

Icefield Studio is an indie studio run by a solo developer from Korea. Development of Crawl Tactics began in 2018, before the completion of the first game, SFD. The core idea was to create an FTL-style roguelike, but with dungeon exploration and tactical combat at the center instead of spaceship management.

One of the problems with traditional SRPGs was that it took a long time to experience the true fun of the game. Icefield Studios aimed to create a fun game from the start, and set a goal to design the game as clearly as possible so that it could be enjoyed without a manual through tooltips and UI.

Furthermore, since the Steam release, user feedback has been actively incorporated to improve the graphics, UI, game systems, and difficulty overall, thereby elevating the game’s quality. The launch of this mobile version is an example of extending the results of these improvements to more platforms.
