• The achievement of a 6-person Belgian team with 13 Early Access updates and over 13,000 Steam downloads maintaining a ‘Very Positive’ rating.

Belgian indie studio Bolt Blaster Games officially released the cooperative survivor roguelite ‘The Spell Brigade’ on Steam as version 1.0 on April 29, simultaneously unveiling the PlayStation 5 version.

Since launching Early Access on September 16, 2024, the game has undergone 13 major updates, sold over 1 million copies, and maintained more than 13,000 ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam. It is particularly noteworthy that this achievement was accomplished by a development team consisting of only six people.

The official launch price is $12.99, and a discount promotion is currently underway on Steam. It also supports cross-play between PC, Steam Deck, and PS5, allowing players to enjoy the game together across various platforms.

A Wizards’ Chaotic Co-op, Neither Allies nor Enemies Are Safe

While the survivors-like genre has grown explosively since *Vampire Survivor*, *The Spell Brigade* is one of the few titles that has established a distinct identity within it. Unlike most survivor games that focus on single-player gameplay, this title emphasizes cooperative mode as its core from the very beginning.

Players, ranging from 1 to 4, work together to fend off waves of enemies, complete objectives, and upgrade spells in real time. The Friendly Fire system, where friendly fire applies to teammates, heightens the tension, but even death is utilized as a tactical tool, as using a Revive Token allows a fallen teammate to return to the battlefield with a massive energy explosion.

There are a total of 15 wizards in the game, and initially only the basic character is available, while the rest can be unlocked using in-game currency.

Infinite magical synergy created through spell synthesis and enchantment

The core fun of the game lies in combining spells to create new synergies. When upgrades, enchantments, scrolls, and quests are combined, and each wizard’s unique abilities interlock with other players’ spells, powerful and completely unexpected synergies are born. This multi-layered system stimulates the desire for consistent replayability.

In the 1.0 update, various content such as bandit-type enemies, elite variants, and new bosses was added. It has added variety to combat. Additionally, through the ‘Ascension’ system, you can obtain more powerful rewards instead of resetting your character, and Through the difficulty adjustment option, skilled players are given the opportunity to progress faster and unlock secret costumes.

Enhanced soundtrack featuring Grammy-nominated composer

One of the most notable additions to the 1.0 update is the original soundtrack by Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, who composed Journey, ABZU, Assassin’s Creed, Hades II, and more. Austin Wintory composed magnificent tracks for all zones and boss battles in The Spell Brigade.

In addition, a complete overhaul of the sound design has been added, further enhancing the impact and immersion of each spell. The new playable character ‘Knelly’ has also been added as a surprise gift, notably presenting new play styles and build possibilities alongside his signature spell ‘Bell March’.

Surpassing 1 Million Early Access Downloads, an Indie Success Story That Grew with the Community

The Spell Brigade is a prime example of a game that has evolved through active communication with the community during its Early Access period.

GameDaily analyzed, “Selling 1 million copies during the Early Access phase alone is an impressive achievement comparable to a finished product,” adding, “Maintaining a ‘Very Positive’ rating during 13 major updates is proof that the development team communicated closely with the community and consistently kept their promises.” GAMESTIC also evaluated it as one of the few titles that has established its own identity within the genre.

A triumph for Belgian indie artists supported by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund
